The Research On Press Activities And Newspapers Thoughts Of Chen Duxiu

Chen Du-xiu is one of the most important thinkers and of the cultural communicators in the modern history of China. Not only was he a pioneer of spreading democracy and science thought and discourse in publicity, but also he was the main sponsor of the New Culture Movement(around the time of the May 4th Movement in 1919) and the commander of the May Fourth Movement(1919, an anti-imperialist,anti-feudal, political and cultural movement influenced by the October Revolution and led by intellectuals having the rudiments of communist ideology). Moreover, he was the founder of the early journalism about the Communist Party of China, whose press activities and newspapers thoughts had a profound and far-reaching influence on China’s modern history. This dissertation studies his press activities, comprehensively sorts out the content and characteristics of his newspapers thoughts during different periods, and rethinks journalism and communication by placing it under new era background.The introduction part mainly introduces the significance of this topic,induces Mr. Chen’s press activities, combs the main situation of his newspapers thoughts studies, and expounds the main research methods and ideas, as well as the innovation of this article.The text is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, according to Chen’s party press activities, his press activities are divided into three periods: namely, liberal newspapers activity period, party newspaper activity period and non-party newspapers activity period. If dividedspecifically, there are five stages. Among them, liberal newspapers activity period can be divided into two stages: press activities in earlier stage and press activities stage during the New Culture Movement. And party newspaper activity period can also be divided into two stages:newspapers activities of the China’s communist party and Trotskyite press activity stage. What’s more, in this chapter, Chen’s early press activities have been generalized. Namely, he had overall accountability for National Day Daily and founded Anhui Common Saying Newspaper,and gave assistance with JiaYin Magazine and so on.The second chapter combs New Youth’s development course, main achievements and the basic train of thought on edition, organization and management. Then, it includes reviews on Weekly Review’s establishment situation and its era influence.The third chapter consists of three sections which respectively discusses Chen’s activities when he founded the press of the Communist Party of China, trots newspapers and final non-party period newspaper.Although the evolution process of his idea was complicate, intricate and iterative, there were certain line of thought and the main line.The fourth chapter has an overall evaluation and analysis of Chen’s newspaper thoughts. First things first, from the views of journalist and of press vocational work, Chen’s press thoughts has been comprehensively analyzed on the basis of clarifying the newspapers and the theoretical source of ideas. Even more, T. S. Chen thought newspaperman as the initiator and leader. By determining newspaperman’s emotional tone, He also regarded them as patriotic people and emphasized that journalist should be independent newspaper critic. In the newspaper businessactivities, with the idea that news is first, T. S. Chen, who insisted on practical rational editorial policy, was used to using theoretical model of extremism, and he attached great importance to the planning consciousness and the overall concept of newspapers.The fifth chapter is about history investigation and evaluation of Chen’s press activities and thoughts on newspaper. In the first place, it discusses Chen’s status and influence on the history of newspapers and periodicals in China. His main performances were as follows: he established some progressive publication, such as New Youth; he opened up a new prospect of China’s newspaper and Chinese culture; he did do the proletarian press practice and theoretical exploration; and he brought forth new ideas in newspapers style. At the same time, his historical limitations are summarized and dissected: his personal spirit led to degradation of newspapers taste; his utterance attitude was too strong;and he overemphasized on newspapers and periodicals’ instrumental property which, to some degree, resulted in ignorance of the professional characteristics of the media.The conclusion part sums up the enlightenment and experience and lessons of Chen’s press activities and his newspapers thoughts on the Chinese press’ development.
