In recent years, journalism culture has been one of the key topics in eastern and western academic community. Journalism culture has been divided into two levels in western academic circle:cultural significance of news products (News Culture), as well as cultural characteristics of journalism (Journalism Culture). In contrast, studies on journalism culture are much more popular. Journalism Culture refers to a series of specific concepts and practices, it means the value of journalism, journalists’ worldview and recognition, it also means the method of reporting, news production practices and others, and news stories, media products. In other words, journalism Culture of this level has sufficient inclusiveness and openness, which is often used by researchers to discuss professionalism, objectivism, professional role identity and even the news ethics. In contrast, domestic scholars often do research by ways of theoretical framework of cultural studies.People have various understanding of culture. Culture is viewed as a kind of value shaping and changing the world by many scholars. In this paper, Journalism Culture refers to value and value point created or showed in journalism activities by the subject of news activities, which also includes different thinkers’ideas about journalism activities in different times. In other words, news is a kind of power that using by people to change the world, while journalism culture is a value concept developed by people in the process of shaping the world by the news and journalism. In this paper, we try to discuss it by this viewpoint.News is a product of society. As a cultural product and a profession, news and journalism are not isolated, they are impacted by society, politics, economy and culture, shaped by sharp ideology and thoughts of different times, showing different features. In this article, under the theme of "modern thoughts and journalism culture" and the outline of the four social trends:liberalism, democracy, populism, consumerism, we discuss the development, characteristics and evolution of four kinds of manifestations:freedom of the press (liberty of the press), journalism democracy, populism of journalism and consumerism of journalism by the influence of social thoughts. We find that freedom of the press is the foundation of journalism democracy, while variations of the freedom is the cause of the rise of consumerism of consumerism of journalism; many concept of journalism reflect journalism democracy, while variations of the concept of journalism democracy has led the popularity of populism of journalism. Through an analysis of these four aspects, we hope to outline the development of journalism concept and the changes of journalism organizations and journalists’thoughts of value. We put it into seven chapters, the introduction chapter shows the current picture of domestic and international research, on journalism culture and our viewpoints. Chapter II discusses the idea of journalism freedom:freedom of the press and liberalism, about the development from freedom of conscience to freedom of the press and journalism freedom, and various arguments around the value of journalism freedom, and finally various paradox about the freedom of journalism. Chapter Ⅲ mainly discusses the idea of democracy of journalism culture (ⅰ):journalistic professionalism and journalism democracy, we discuss the connection of journalistic professionalism and elite democratic by studying two problems:the establishment of journalism democracy and journalistic professionalism, the latter is the elite model of journalism democracy. Chapter Ⅳ discusses the idea of democracy of journalism culture (ⅱ):public journalism, citizen journalism and democracy thoughts. We explore the relationship of public journalism and participatory democracy, citizen journalism and monitory democracy. Chapter V discusses the evolution of the concept of journalism democracy:journalism culture and populism. We begin with the two theoretical origins of the rise of journalism populism:political populism and cultural populism, then analyze the populism of traditional journalism, at last, we analyze the interaction between new media and the populism of journalism. Chapter Ⅵ discusses the evolution of the concept of freedom of journalism culture:the rise of journalism consumerism and its affection. First, we discusses the evolution of journalism consumerism, then the journalism consumerism by the view of culture production and the affection of consumerism, finally we discusses the role of intellectuals in the journalism consumerism. We make a conclusion in Chapter Ⅵ, which analyzes of the value of building a free and fair journalism culture for the development of contemporary journalism.Journalism culture is a topic recently raised a lot of concerns, but we seldom find specific studies from the view of value. We start from the concept of value, analyze the characteristics and evolution of journalism culture, which is under the affection of four social thoughts of liberalism, democracy, populism, consumerism, finally show a full picture and development path of journalism culture.
