Purpose: We evaluated the morphological, immunological and functional response to small intestinal submucosa grafting and bladder extracellular matrix of the tunica albuginea to determine its potential as a grafting material for penile surgery.Materials and Methods: Male New Zealand White rabbits underwent a sham procedure (20) or tunical excision and grafting with small intestinal submucosa (20)and bladder extracellular matrix . A total of 20 Male New Zealand White rabbits underwent implantation of 10×5mm small intestinal submucosa graft and 20 rabbits underwent implantation of 10×5mm bladder extracellular matrix following excision of an ellipse of tunica albuginea and 20 control animals underwent tunical excision with reimplantation of this autologous segment. The animals were euthanized, and the penis was sectioned and histologically studied at intervals of 2, 6,12, and 24 weeks. Before death an erection was induced by a rapid intracavernosal injection with saline.and the cavernous pressure was measured, except of animals of postoperation at 2W. After death the area under the graft was evaluated for stromal collagen by H & E, Masson's trichrome stain and Stirus stain, Protein expression of the inflammatory markers inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and transforming growth factor-βl(TGF-β1) was...
