| Objective:To determine serum IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) level in healthy Chinese adults above 18 years old, establish the normal range of serum IGF-1 and verify the correlation between serum IGF-1 and age, gender, BMI (body mass index) and regions.Methods:6749 healthy adults were recruited from Beijing and Guizhou Province, respectively in north and south China. After questionnaire survey, physical examination and laboratory examination,2841 volunteers (1362 males,1479females) were selected. They were divided into 13 groups by ages(18,19,20-24,25-29,30-34,35-39,40-44,45-49,50-54,55-59,60-64, 65-69,≥70). The serum IGF-1 level was determined by IMMULITE 2000 with chemiluminescent assay. LMS methods was applied to build the curve of serum IGF-1 and age. The SDS (standard deviate score) was used to calculate the correlation between serum IGF-1 and age, gender, BMI (body mass index) and regions.Results:(1) Serum IGF-1 level decreased with age in both sexes. The median for serum IGF-1 was for each age group were 374.1 ng/mL,314.8ng/mL,267.4 ng/mL,230.2 ng/mL,201.6 ng/mL, 180.1 ng/mL,164.0 ng/mL,151.8 ng/mL,141.8 ng/mL,132.5 ng/mL,122.3 ng/mL,109.6 ng/mL and 92.7 ng/mL respectively. (2) No significant difference of IGF-1 value was observed between men and women except for the age group 60-64 (P=0.0329). (3)In some specific gender-and age-group (18-24,60-69 in males and 25-29,50-54,65-69 in females), serum IGF-1 level was correlated with BMI. (4) There was a significant difference between serum IGF-1 level in Guizhou population and that in Beijing (P<0.05), and was greater in females. Serum IGF-1 level in Guizhou population was higher than in Beijing. (5) The upper and lower limit of normal range was significantly different from that provided by the kit.Conclusion:We establish the first normal range of IGF-1 level in Chinese population and lie the foundation of the diagnosis and treatment of several diseases including acromegaly and adult growth hormone deficiency.
