BackgroundOveractive bladder (OAB) is a syndrome characterized by urgency, with or without urge incontinence, often associated with urinary frequency, nocturia, ruling out urinary tract infections and other organic diseases. OAB is a common disease in adults. For some patients, the disease is a heavy burden, severely affecting their quality of life. Since the diagnosis of OAB entirely based on the symptoms, a comprehensive assessment of this disease does rely on quality of life questionnaires with good psychological characteristics.Urinary Incontinence (UI) refers to involuntary urine outflow which can be subdivided into:(1) Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), patients leak with increased abdominal pressure when they cough, sneeze or hold weights; (2) Urge Urinary Incontinence (UUI), refers to the involuntary leakage with urgency, often accompanied by urinary frequency and nocturia; (3) Mixed Urinary Incontinence (MUI), patients with both Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) and Urge Urinary Incontinence (UUI).The Urge Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (U-IIQ) and Urge-Urinary Distress Inventory (U-UDI) are questionnaires used to assess Overactive Bladder (OAB) and Mixed Urinary incontinence (MUI) quality of life. The original English version has been validated with good reliability and validity. Urge Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (U-IIQ) has been introduced by the International Continence Society (ICS) as class A questionnaire.ObjectiveIn this study, we introduce U-IIQ and U-UDI. We aim at developing Chinese version of the questionnaires and evaluating the reliability and validity of the questionnaires in patients with Overactive Bladder (OAB) and Mixed Urinary Incontinence (MUI).Method1. Develop the simplified Chinese version of U-IIQ and U-UDI.2. Assess the reliability and validity of U-IIQ and U-UDI in Chinese population.Result124 cases are enrolled in the verification of U-IIQ and U-UDI.U-IIQ and U-UDI have an excellent consistency. The Cronbach’s a is 0.946 and 0.865.The test-retest reliability of the two questionnaires is excellent. The ICCs between the two surveys of U-HQ and U-UDI are 0.575-0.966,0.575-0.966 (P<0.05)Factor analysis shows factor components of U-ⅡQ and U-UDI are basically consistent with the theoretical structure. The simplified Chinese versions of U-IIQ, U-UDI are significantly correlated with ⅡQ-7 at the 0.01 level (two-tailed). The Spearman correlation coefficients are 0.745 and 0.601. A higher score indicates a greater trouble with incontinence/bladder problems.Independent samples t-test shows that the simplified Chinese version U-IIQ and U-UDI can distinguish among mild, moderate and severe patients with overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS), indicating a good discriminant validity.ConclusionThe results show that simplified Chinese versions of U-ⅡQ and U-UDI have high reliability and validity. These two questionnaires can be used as disease-specific quality of life questionnaires in the clinic.
