Construction industry is the strategic supporting industry in China. With the rapid development of industrialization, urbanization and modernization, demands on faster development of construction industry are growing. Meanwhile, environmental problems caused by activities throughout the lifecycle of constructions are also growing to be a major obstacle of the sustainable development of national economy. Millions of years of human civilization history prove that Ecological Modernization (EM) is, based on the industrial civilization, the historical choice of human being to further pursue the sustainable social and human development. It is higher stage of modernization with the multi-win achieving of economic development, social progress and ecological environment. There are huge national and industrial differences in terms of the realization of EM. Current research works focusing on the national or regional EM is far from enough from directing the industry-based practices in the reality. Taking construction industry as a study factors, this paper throws its effort on the study of systematic model and driving mechanisms of EM in construction industry. As a result, evaluating system and methods are developed aiming at promoting the EM development in construction industry in China.First of all, based on definition study and theoretical analysis, this paper gives the definition of EM in construction industry. Fundamental essence of this definition is investigated and a core of "ideology—practice--performance" is identified as the major study reference for following works. Then the development models and structure of EM in construction industry are studied from different viewpoints and entity-oriented theoretical models of EM in construction industry are built accordingly. Based on the above work, key driving factors in terms of promoting EM in construction industry are identified and studied using Demark as a case study. Critical driving mechanisms of EM in construction industry are analyzed after that.。Second, according to the essence and features of development process of EM in construction industry, this paper sets up an tri-angle analytical framework for the process evaluating aims by combining the "life cycle management", "ideology—practice--performance" and "ecological—economic--social" latitudes. As a result, a multi- latitudes, multi-layer, whole-life-cycle evaluating system is set up. As originality, ecological ideology, practical innovative and economical benefits are added into this system to give a clear big picture of the EM process of construction industry in question. This work not only stresses the multi-win development goals of EM, but also serves as an important instruction to promote the EM transformation in construction industry.Thirdly, in order to keep the scientific and efficient performance of the evaluating systems built here; this paper develops and formulates a multi-layer fuzzy comprehensive evaluating methodological system. Software of matlab is used to develop the computer process to realize the automatic evaluation and timely calculation. With this computer model we developed, judge process and data inputting are also simplified. This work enhances the practical and applicable values of the theoretical work in this paper as well as broadens the flexibility and expandability of the evaluating system being applied in other industries. Finally, case study on the EM level of Dalian construction industry is conducted in the end. Original evaluating data were collected through questionnaire survey on related entities to the development of Dalian construction industry. The computer model developed in chapter 5 was used to accomplish the multiple-level fuzzy comprehensive analysis on the original evaluating data, It turns out that Dalian construction industry is on the starting stage of EM with an obvious higher economic and social performance compared with the ecological one. Lack of ecological modernization ideology and practices will be the crucial hindering factors for future EM development of Dalian construction industry. Based on the result of the case study, this research furthers its step into the discussion of potential routine for the whole Chinese construction industry in terms of EM. A synthetic model of jumping into the road of EM is forwarded in the end.
