Landing gear is one of the most essential components of the aircraft. It supports the aircraft during parking and endures the loads during ground maneuvers. Most of the vertical and horizontal kinetic energy are absorbed and dissipated by landing gear. It plays an extreme important role in preventing the airframe from vibration and excessive impact forces, improving passenger comfortable characteristics and increasing aircraft flight safety.During the process of landing, an aircraft is exposed to a short-duration impulsive impact. The landing impact has been recognized as a significant factor in structural fatigue damage, dynamic stress on the aircraft airframe, and crew and passenger discomfort. How to precisely simulate the landing process of an aircraft and effectively absorb aircraft landing kinetic energy to attenuate the impact loads on aircraft is a problem facing the landing gear community.In the former study of the landing process of an aircraft, modeling and analysis methods are conventional and a little bit drop behind. Computational multibody dynamics and virtual prototyping technology are brand new modeling and analysis methods for simulating the landing process of an aircraft. It seems to be imperative to study the behavior of landing gears and the airframe during the process of landing impact.For the past decades, many efforts have been made to learn the behaviors of landing gear during touchdown. With these known behaviors of landing gear, a number of methods have been developed to attenuate the landing impact loads. One of them is to improve the structural type of landing gear or the dynamic characteristics of the shock strut, which is the main component of the landing gear system. Another way to attenuate the landing impact loads is to embed a control system into landing gear system. This article introduces a new conception named the landing region to attenuate the landing impact loads during touchdown.
