The features of modern Chinese cities usually are fast developing in both population and urban area, increasing in number of business centers and industry centers, and overwhelming increasing rate of car ownership against population. Consequently, traffic congestion appears, originally in big cites, afterward in middle and small cites. Urban transportation is becoming one of the focus issues of the whole society. Urban transportation is the movements of people and goods from originals to destinations, through which using any kind of trip modes, utilizing different transportation facilities, consuming different energy, and for different purposes. Among them, people's movements are exactly the assembling of individual trip decisions of urban citizens from originals to destinations. Therefore, the solution of urban transportation partly depends on the research of trip activities of those people who live in the cities. Based on the data of more than ninety travel surveys coming from more than seventy cities in recent twenty years, this dissertation analyzed relations between urban citizens'trip behaviors and their social, city and natural surviving environments, and a system of data searching of person trip characteristic parameters from tables or views were founded. These works may help to solve urban transportation problems fundamentally, and promote the model of transportation planning(UTPS)to be used more widely. Chapter 2 summarized the travel survey practices of civil and foreign cities, and a uniform definition of person trip was given, as well as recommendations of numbers of traffic zone and sampling ratio. The definitions, representative index and common rules of trip rate, trip purposes structure, trip time distribution, trips space distribution and trip modes structure were also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 3 analyzed how trip characteristics developed with the increase of city non-agricultural population, and some forecasting formulae were given. Trough the analysis and mathematical calculation of trip rate, this chapter also obtained acceptable trip time and reasonable city size. A judgment of rationality of current trip modes structure of civil big cities was made accordingly. Chapter 4 studied impacts of urban shape, land decentralization extent and center number, which are three core elements of urban form, on the trip characteristics. And some conclusions were drawn that compact land use, multi-center structure and independent satellite towns will help to reduce the sum of trip demands and decentralize the traffic flow. Consequently, we should promote the urban form of big cities from single-center to multi-center. Increasing the size of satellite towns, consummating their functions and bringing rail transit into action are also helpful. With the usage of compactness ratio, this chapter formed regression formulae between trip characteristics, urban form and city size. Chapter 5 tried to contact the trip characteristics with city economy level. Therefore, the impact of family earning on the amount, styles and modes of trips of family members were analyzed, as well as the impact of quantity and quality of transportation facilities on the trip zonal difference. Accordingly, some functional relations between trip characteristics and GDP per person were built. Chapter 6 discussed the impact of air temperature, topography and altiplano on trip characteristics separately. It indicated that natural environment influences trip characteristics on many aspects, especially on trip modes and trip distance. With the usage of natural damp coefficient, this chapter also conducted a research on the functional relations between trip characteristics, topography and natural or manual obstacles. Chapter 7 made a cross-classify to civil cities making use of urban forms and topography. Then, a set of views and regression formulae by city sorts, indicating the functional relations between trip characteristics, city non-agricultural population and GDP per person, were built, so as to acquire approximate trip characteristics without travel survey and forecast future figures. In view of the fast developing of Chinese cities, chapter 8 analyzed impacts of some new city developing trends and social phenomenon on trip characteristics,...
