The industry of airport in China has developed rapidly since the reform and opening, however, the imbalance and incoordination of airport development remains serious. So we need to identify the spatial pattern evolution and driving mechanism of airport passenger and freight. In this study, the methods of weighted standard deviational ellipse and GIS are applied to passenger and freight volume of 210 airports in China from 2006 to 2015 aiming to project the spatio-temporal evolution of air passenger and freight system.Use Moran's I,Lisa,Spatial Gini coefficient to analyze space-related utility and the matching degree with economic space. And finally,we establish spatial econometric model to identify the driving mechanism of air transport spatial pattern. The results are as followings:1.The spatial gravity center of airport passenger and freight volume of China is moving westward, airport passenger becomes spatially expanded during 2006-2015,while airport freight becomes spatially contracted.2.The geographical distribution of passenger and freight transportation elements exists obviously agglomerate effect. The passenger and freight volume spatial disparity is decreasing with the spatial equilibrium increasing.3.Airport passenger and freight has significant spatial correlation;the spatial distribution of airport passenger and freight demand matches the spatial distribution of economy, and the degree of agglomeration gradually decreases.4.The regression based on spatial error model is more significant.Economic, demographic and industrial structure is the main driving factor of air passenger demand pattern, while economic and industrial structure is the main driving factor of air freight demand pattern, the results of this study will be of important guiding value for airport siting and airport layout decision in China.
