With the development of modern technology, the integration of the world tradeand the globalization of the cultural communication and entertainment, every countryhopes to take an active part in the international communication so as to succeed in thefierce competition. As a result, it has become an urgent task to cultivate a largenumber of qualiifed translators. In recent decades, the teaching of translation inuniversities and colleges has been developing extremely quickly. However,in highschools the teaching of translation has not received enough attention for a long time, and thus, the cultivation of the students’ translation skills has been ignored to someextent. As a result, students’ average score of the translation part in the collegeentrance examination has been relatively low compared with other parts on the paper. Some sentences translated by students were rather ungrammatical and senseless.Under these circumstances, the teaching of translation is far from satisfactory, letalone to meet the needs of English Curriculum Standard of High Schools. Therefore, the author of this thesis suggests applying Nidas functional equivalence theory to theteaching of translation in key high schools.Starting from the translation part in College Entrance Examination of English inShanghai, the author illustrates the situation of the teaching of translation in seniorhigh schools, analyzes the tack of translation skills among the students and distributesquestionnaires to the students and the teachers of English in the High SchoolAiffliated to Shanghai Normal University for the purpose of revealing the mainproblems in the teaching of translation in key high schools. After those problems havebeen carefully analyzed, the author puts forward some tentative suggestions. One is toteach students the basic translation theories. Another is to teach translation with theguidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, which can help cultivate students’consciousness of the comparison between Chinese and English so as to avoidChinglish and achieve an equivalence between the meaning and culture. To test the validity, the author carries out an experiment in two parallel classes she teaches, andlater collects and analyzes the data, which proves the suggestions reasonable andapplicable. At the end of the thesis, the author puts forward suggests for futureresearch with the expectation of improving the teaching of translation and through thisincreasing the translation ability on the part of the students.
