On Translation And Foreign Language Teaching

The idea for this thesis emerges from the newly issued National English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools.The aims for English teaching as stated in NECS are: we should cultivate students' comprehensive proficiency in using language. There are also detailed goals and requirements for translation at Level 7, Level 8, and Level 9. Students above Level 7 should be able to "do simple non-professional written translation and interpretation.On the basis of these aims, I choose " Teaching translation and translation teaching in the perspective of NECS" as my research topic.My research is mainly based on qualitative study as well as quantitative study, including questionnaire, interviews, observations, analysis of the teaching materials and inductive data analysis. My new opinion about the teaching of translation in high schools is put forward by using induction, comparison, and reasoning in combination.This thesis weighs the major relations between quality-oriented education and translation, and demonstrates the interwoven relationship between four linguistic skills and translation competence. Then I review the teaching of translation in the Chinese context as the basis for further discussion, followed by implications from Zhang si-zhong (Ð’JS4O andXinpeipei (^jifrjifr) as well as American Standards for Foreign Language Learning m the 21* century.
