A Study On Confucius’ Thought Of Family Reverence

Family reverence is the root of excellence and takes up an important position in the ideology of Confucius.It is also closely related to the moral practice of Confucian Virtue. Confucius’ thought of family provided children bounden responsibility and is still active today for our reference.And because of the inherent commonality of family relations and other social relations, the thought of family reverence can also provide reference for solving the problems in other social relations in contemporary society.First of all, the difference of respect and support is regaeded as a starting point.In this way, Respect as the core of Confucius’ thought of family reverence is found. Thus, through the analysis of three levels(Support, Countenance and Inheritance) of the thought of family reverence, we can find that the identity between Inheritance and Respect is existed, the essence of Inheritance is the practice performance of respect. From the perspective of human relations,Inheritance between children and parents means role identification. Respect means the love which is different from family love, based on human relations.From the relationship of Ren and family reverence, Ren(loyalty and forgiveness) is also a kind of humman love which is based on family reverence in practice.Secondly, it is an in-depth study on the specific items of family reverence. The main steps are: First step: The study begin with the relationship between family reverence and Ritual,then analyze how to realize the value and significance of the relationship between the father of human relations by the way of Ritual, a kind of behavior pattern. Second step: Discussing the singificance of self esteem in set membership. Third step: Discussing the means of “ benign countenance”and “gently remonstrate”and the significance of them in Confucius’ thought of family reverence. Fourth step: Discussing the identity between family affairs and politics, relationship between family affairs and government governance. Fifth step: Discussing the mean of “devolve one’s own love to others” and to construct human relations, creating ethical value in this process.Then, the study focused on the relationship betweem family reverence and cultivating virtue, and related practical ability. The main steps are: First step: the concept of relational self and Uniqueness self is put forward. Then Emphasize family relationship has a key role in relational self moulding and the ealization of uniqueness self. Second step: Discussing the relationship between self-cultivation which is the key to benevolent people and respect. Then puting forward a viewpoint that self-cultivation is a process of self-realization and self-rectification of names. Third step: Discussing two kinds of practical ability: Imagination and creativity. Then explaining the meaning of these two kinds of ability and how to get them and the transformation between the two.Finally, this article will turn the angle of view to the the part of the great controversy in Confucius’ thought of family reverence: “concealment between relative”. From the point of view of specific historical situation, the author combes the contradictions and conflicts in “concealment between relative” and put forward new ideas. Then the modern significance of honest one’s wrong is also explained.
