This paper compares the family role of women in China and Thailand as depicted in Summer Snow and 20,30,40, at the same time serves as a study of the characteristics of women's roles in both countries. The film Summer Snow by the Chinese director Ann Hui and 20,30,40 by the Thai director Yok boolapa is compared side by side. Director and author, Hui's film depicts women's fate and shows the feminist consciousness. Since the 1990's, Hui has not only presented women's views on love, but also presented an all-around image of women's role in relationship, family and career from different aspects. This paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1:The Conflict of Chinese Women's Family Role and Social Role, and Their Choices; Chapter 2:Thai Women's Conflict of Roles; Chapter 3:Comparison of Women's Image in Chinese Films and Thai Films; Chapter 4:Comparison of Women's Family Role in China and Thailand.Foreword:This paper first compares the women's family role as depicted in Summer Snow and 20,30,40, with a retrospective study of China and Thailand and a brief introduction of the status of women in both countries.Chapter 1:The Conflict of Chinese Women's Family Role and Social Role, and Their Choices. There are mainly two points for discussion. The first point is the history of feminist films in China; the second is a comparison of Ann Hui's feminist film. We can see the conflict of women's two roles, and understand the reason for their choice.Chapter 2:Thai women's conflict of roles is well depicted in the film 20,30, 40. There are also two points for discussion:first the history of feminist films in Thailand, second an analysis of two female characters through comparison of family role and social role. It could be inferred from the two feminist films that the social and family conflicts have existed for a long time, but there's a major difference between traditional and contemporary women, the latter having more choices.Chapter 3:Comparison of Women's Image in Chinese Films and Thai Films. There are two points for discussion:the first is a comparison of the family role in 20, 30,40 and Summer Snow; the second is a comparison of women's image in China and Thailand. In comparing women's image in Chinese and Thai feminist films, this paper tries to show the common points between them. Through analysis and comparison and with the different cultural background considered, we can see several differences between women in the two countries, e.g. daily life, religion, family value, feminist consciousness, etc. With distinct culture, women in the two countries show unique characteristics in different times.Chapter 4:Comparison of Women's Family Role in China and Thailand. This paper compares traditional women and contemporary women in China, e.g. contemporary women are more independent and courageous, tend to seek their own significance and happiness. In Thailand, however, women's family is presented in a different form. In the transition from family role to social role, contemporary women's change in family role leads to change of position in different times and phases. Conclusion this paper compares the family role of women in China and Thailand as depicted in Summer Snow and 20,30,40 and tries to show the common points between them. Women in the two countries have unique characteristics in different times, due to some background differences, their choice also differ in different areas.
