Digital photo frame (DPF) is a platform for displaying digital images. Resentyears,digital images have shown a trend of exponential growth,which greatlypromoted the development of the digital photo frame. The market of DPF hasexperienced several periods of fast growth,and many famous electronic equipmentmanufacturers flow into this field because of its bullish prospect. Although there aremany DPF solutions with own characters,according to carefully analysis,thefollowing problems can be summarized: The DPFs with higher performance have ahigher price and a less attention; the DPFs with lower price and more attention have alower performance and less function. So, design a kind of DPF with more function andlower cost is important for gaining customers’ favor and more market shares.This paper has designed a SOPC on a low cost Cyclone FPGA of Altera, whichtook the advantage of the concurrent processing capability of FPGA and the flexibilityof Nios II Processor. Migrated uC/OS-II operating system and MiniGUI graphics userinterface support system, designed friendly man-computer interface. Finally, realized amultifunction, stable and low cost DPF which has friendly interface and easy toupdate.The main work of this paper could be divided into hardware and software design.The contents of hardware design include researching algorithm about digital imageprocessing, building a SOPC based on Nios II processor, designing custom module,and connecting peripheral circuit. The custom module designed by Verilog HDL hasimage processing capacity which includes rotating, scaling, blurring, sharpening,graying and edge detecting. SD card was used to store images and audios, and LTMtouch screen was used as the display and input equipment. The software design partused uC/OS-II as the operating system of the DPF, and migrated MiniGUI to theuC/OS-II for designing interface and application program.This design can replace traditional photo frames to display personal photo athome, or be used for displaying products in shops. This system has fast processingspeed because of building SOPC system based on Nios II processor and designingimage processing modules by the way of hardware logic. The DPF system designed inthis paper has a bullish prospect because of many characters such as flexibility ofdesign, hardware tailoring, system stability, updating expediently, short design cycle, low cost and so on.
