Along with the acceleration of urbanization, competitions among cities are nowgetting more and more intense. Particularly,"city image",as an important factor ofcity competitiveness, has been drawing an increasing amount of public attention. Many cities have been creating and communicating their city images by hosting largesport events. With the understanding of city image as largely a media construction, the paper explores different ways in which media reports on large sport events shapecity images. In terms of sample collecting,I selected related reports from "People’sDaily" on the Guangzhou Asian Games. Building upon theories of city image, myarticle takes a both qualitative and quantitative approach to look at these reports’theme, structure, and discourse frameworks. In this process, many analysis methodshave been used focusing respectively on framework, contents and cases. The aim is toshow how exactly "the People’s Daily" constructed city image of Guangzhou usingAsian Game reports. I finally came into conclusion that these Asian Game reportshave done a great job in constructing Guangzhou as a charming city blessed with bothlong traditional culture and intense modern breath. In order to achieve this, differentcommunication strategies have been applied in different time slots successfully, including accurate image definition, concentrated construction, action with clearobjectives, and rectification of negative images. Also report comments have beenmanipulated and proper issues extended. However, there are still lots of aspects to beimproved. For example, some reports are too tendentious, too dependent on particularsource, and inadequate on follow-ups.Using theories beyond communication studies, like those of urban sociology andmarketing,my study also offers an innovative cross-disciplinary perspective on therelationship between media reports of sport game events and construction of cityimage.
