Background:Musculi piriformis is deeply located in buttock, nearing the sciatic nerve, whose location and the anatomic relationship with sciatic nerve is often varied. It is easily impaired by all kinds of dynamic or static factors because of its anatomical characteristics, which cause local congestion, edema, spasm, hypertrophy, immobility, scar or adherence. Those impairments constrict and stretch the sciatic nerve or constrict common peroneal nerve which branches off highly. The pathological changes caused by that are named as piriformis syndrome. This disease is one kind of the peripheral nerve compress syndrome and a common reason of sciatica. It accounted for15%-25%among all the soft tissue trauma of waist, leg and buttock according to the reports in domestic literatures. The age at diagnosis of piriformis syndrome becomes younger and younger. The incidence of piriformis syndrome is increasing every year because of the hard and longtime work, which deeply influences patients’daily life and work. It becomes to a very important clinical research to find one kinds of safe, effective and efficient method to treat this disease. Clinical doctors are working hardly on the disease and improve the effect of treating it by TCM methods. There isn’t unitive and objective index for judging therapeutic effect so the patients and medical workers didn’t know the disease deeply and the medical workers couldn’t improve their skill well.Object:Observe the clinical therapeutic effect of Qi acupuncture combining with massage therapy. Use the VAS to evaluate the effect and compare to that of the physical therapy. Broaden the field of application of Qi acupuncture to benefit patients.Method: A randomized study is used in this clinical research. Establish the standards of diagnosis, inclusion, exclusion and termination. The scorecards of signs and symptoms forms and VAS are recorded by the researchers before and after the treatment. Explain the meaning and object of the research to the patients and make sure that the patients properly understand the questions’meaning on the forms. The score should be judged by the patients’ real condition and self-feeling. Exclude the cases without full information. All the data is been dealt with by STATA9statistic program and tested by t-test and x2test. The difference is significant if p<0.05and obvious significant if p<0.01.Results:The difference of general conditions, including age and sex, between treatment group and control group, is not significant by the t-test and x2test. The t test of patients’data before treatment show variance is homogeneous. The scores of therapeutic effect and VAS of two group are all drop obviously, but that of treatment group drop more obviously. The difference is significant (P<0.05).Conclusion:The clinical effect of Qi acupuncture combining with massage therapy in treating piriformis syndrome is observed in this research. The VAS is used as an objective index. Those improve the reliability and comparability in clinical research. The research showed that Qi acupuncture combining with massage therapy is effective in treating piriformis syndrome and the side effect is small so it is worth been popularized.
