Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate nursing students' personality characteristics,cIinical performance and nursing professional attitude status. The nursing students are undergraduate nursing students and were in nursing training. We also explore the relationship among these three variables in order to provide theoretical basis and practical instruction for stabilizing nursing professional attitude and making good clinical performance for nursing students in training.Methods: 646 nursing students who were training in 3 xiangya medical school's affiliated hospitals of central south university were recruited by random sampling to fill in the questionnaire, and 584 effective samples were obtained (valid response rate: 90.4%). The general, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ), Arthur.D's Nursing Professional Self-Concept Inventory and the Clinical Performance Self-rating Scale were used in this survey. Descriptive analysis, Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Spearman rank correlation, multiple linear regression and path analysis were performed with the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 11.5.Results:1. There were statistically significant differences of both score of clinical performance and nursing professional attitude in different groups divided by different personality characteristics. Score of clinical performance and nursing professional attitude of Extroversion dimension is higher than Introvision group(p<0.05), Score of clinical performance and nursing professional attitude of Neuroticism group is higher than no Neuroticism group (p<0.05), Score of nervousness group is higher than no nervousness group(p<0.05).2. Spearman correlation analysis showed that there were positive correlations between the Extroversion and Introvision dimension and clinical performance(P<0.001), the Extroversion and Introvision dimension and nursing professional attitude (P<0.001). Spearman correlation analysis also showed that there were negative correlations between the Neuroticism dimension and clinical performance(P<0.001), Neuroticism dimension and nursing professional attitude(P<0.001), Nervousness dimension and clinical performance (P<0.001), Nervousness dimension and nursing professional attitude(P<0.001).3. Personality characteristics can influence on clinical performance thought two pathways. one is direct: personality characteristics→clinical performance, another is indirect: personality characteristics→nursing professional attitude→clinical performance.Conclusion1. Most students investigated in this study were satisfied with their clinical performance, the students who shows different personality characteristics have different clinical performance.2. Most nursing students were satisfied with their professional attitudes. The students who show different personality characteristics have different professional attitudes.3. There was positive correlation between clinical performance and nursing professional attitude. Better nursing professional attitude, better clinical performance.
