Objectives: TO explore the main diseases affecting life of residents in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and to make evidence for the health decision-making. Methods: 24 units from the south and the north of Xinjiang were selected by stratified sampling. The analyses were based on the Annual Report on Death Causes of Inhabitants' Diseases and Injuries and other relevant background information from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2005, and diseases were classified through the ICD-10. The content investigated included name, age, sex, death age, health history, death cause and local economic informations and so on. Variables such as mortality and Potential years of life lost (PYLL) were calculated. All data were processed by SPSS 11.0 for windows, and the statistic methods used were Life Table,Eliminated Life Table, and PYLL, etc. Results: The average number of population was 305,329 and the proportion of male and female was 107 to 100 inXinjiang Production and Construction Corps during 2003-2005. The total death number reached 5,248, and the annual average mortality rate of the residents was 572.93/10~5, 713.54/10~5 in male, 422.25/10~5 in female. Ranked by the causes of the death, the top five were cardiovascular diseases, malignant tumor, diseases of respiratory system, injuries and poisoning, and infectious diseases. The leading PYLL were injuries and poisoning, malignant tumor, infectious, cardiovascular diseases, diseases of respiratory system. The average life expectancy of the residents was 73.54 years old. The main death causes affecting the life expectancy were disease of circular system, neoplasm, disease of respiratory system, injuries and poisoning, the life expectancies prolonged 5.79, 2.9, 2.87, and 2.01 years respectively it was calculated without these death causes.
