People’s livelihood, is the life of the people.The improvement of people’s livelihood is the state of material life and spiritual-cultural life improved continuously. With the development of economy and society, the improvement of people’s livelihood has become the most concerned currently in our government and the public. As the dynamic elements of social development and the people’s liberation, education must be the basic part of the people’s livelihood, and be the premise to improve people’s livelihood in other aspects. As one mode of existence, educated in schools has become a special part of everyone’s life in modern society. The level of development of education has become an important indicator to measure the quality of life. In the process of improving people’s livelihood, whether it is rely on the system guarantee, the market benefit, reciprocity among residents, or the self-improvement by the subject, cannot be separated from the basic role of education.The basic role of education in improving people’s livelihood is not inherent, but the rusult of forming the overall structure of education and generating functions under the subject’s corresponding view of education. In the process, the concept is the key to transfer educational functions from ideas into realities. In the existing research, with "society-human" for framework of understanding, direct education from two aspects of social functions of education and educational functions of education has become the "Conclusive " research consensus. However, from improving people’s livelihood perspective, the current concept of educational functions shows the tendency of covering the people’s livelihood orientation of education. Incorporate is:the concept of social functions of education, that based on human sociality in general, is not enough to show multiple properties of the subject of people’ livelihood as the whole of life; and emphasize the relationship between education and non daily life, but be short of the individual’s daily life; and stress the long-term significance of education on economic and social development, but neglect individual’s currunt life.In terms of the concept of educational functions of education, socialization with non-standpoint itself is not enough to show the real being of the subject of people’livelihood, and the tendency of abstract theory of human nature implied it result in the educational needs of the subject based on the livelihood are ignored.There is profound historical, practical and epistemological root for the people’s livelihood oriented education covered. First of all, education value of utilitarian from the tradition, nationalism and the ideal of education is the historical reason. Secondly, the independent significance of improving people’s livelihood is ignored in the latecomer country in modernization, dependent pattern of individual life in overall social pattern and education system with elitism tendency is the realistic reason. In addition, the partial understanding of historical materialism as the source of our educational functions theory and the entity thinking tendency of concept of educational functions is the epistemological root.In order to interpret the role of education in improving people’s livelihood exactly and comprehensively, this study put forward the educational functions in people’s livelihood apart from social functions of education and educational functions of education. The functions of education in people’s livelihood is the efficacy and role of education system on shaping and promoting the subjectivity of the subject of people’s livelihood, guiding whom to improve viability, development capacity and life quality, and then promoting individual’s all-around development. Firstly, cultivate the quality of the subject in improving material conditions and guide them improve the material quality of life, which including improving the individual employability and income level, and enhancing the individual’s ability of material consumption and forming the correct concept of material consumption, and guiding individual to live a healthy and quality life. Secondly, enrich the subject’s mental world and improve the quality of spiritual life, which including guiding individual to form a positive healthy mental state and improving the quality of leisure life. Thirdly, improve the subject’s happiness capacity, which including guiding the individual to establish a correct concept of happiness, forming just social environment contributes to one’s happiness and improving people’s subjective well-being.The subject-given of educational functions determines it can be constructed and generated. Educational values play a direct role in the orientation and positioning of educational function, and which is the preconditions of educational functions generate. On the basis of the corresponding educational values, building education policy, adjusting the structure of education, strengthening the curriculum reform is the general procedures for achieving educational functions. Achieve educational functions in people’s livelihood also follow such steps, specifically including:transcending the educational values of social standard, and building educational development in standpoint of people’s livelihood and setting up life-oriented educational values; adhering to the new education policy and establishing educational policies oriented to the improving people’s livelihood; adjusting and optimizing the hierarchy and discipline structure of education; strengthening curriculum reform, that value on science education career education while penetrating career education in the relevant courses, and keep on strengthening the development of local curriculum.
