Both the global financial crisis in 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years have created huge external demand uncertainties for the Chinese economy. The rise of Internet commerce and the increase of consumer income have also promoted the trend of more diversified and differentiated consumer market in China. In this context, the promotion of the position of enterprises in the global value chain is of great significance for the governance capacity and performance of Chinese enterprises,as well as the promotion of China’s economic development and international standing. Therefore,it is necessary to deeply study the differentiation of import preference in the destination country and understand the demand and trend of the destination market,so that Chinese enterprises can better adapt to the demand of the destination market and gain more market shares by providing products and services in line with the demand of the destination country,so as to better grasp the opportunities, optimize the operation and management of enterprises, and improve the governance capacity and performance of enterprises.Based on the matching data of China Industrial enterprise database,China Customs Trade Database and BACI-CEPII database from 2000 to 2014,this paper puts import preference differentiation of destination country into the same analytical framework as the position of global value chain of enterprises, and further studies the influence mechanism and practical role of import preference differentiation of destination country on the position of global value chain of enterprises. The research findings are as follows: First, the greater the degree of import preference differentiation of the destination country, the more upstream the position of the enterprise in the global value chain.Second, export expansion margin and export product quality are the core paths through which import preference differentiation of destination countries affects the position of enterprises in the global value chain.Export expansion margin has a positive effect, while export product quality has a negative effect.Thirdly, the heterogeneity analysis shows that the import preference differentiation of destination countries has a heterogeneous effect on the global value chain position upgrading of enterprises with different economic development conditions of destination countries, enterprises with different regions, enterprises with different ownership, different product quality and different product types. This paper has enriched the research on the relationship between demand preference and global value chain to a certain extent, and provided theoretical reference and policy suggestions for the climbing path of enterprises’ high-end position in global value chain from the perspective of external demand. |
