China is one of the world’s largest agricultural production countries, and the development of its agricultural industry plays a crucial role in the country’s economy. As an important basic industry of the Chinese economy, agriculture occupies a significant position in the national economy. The vegetable industry is an essential component of Chinese agriculture and a crucial source of food for people’s daily lives. With the rapid development of the Chinese economy and the acceleration of urbanization, the demand for vegetables continues to increase, and the vegetable industry is developing rapidly.Qingdao is one of the regions in Shandong Province with a relatively developed vegetable industry, and Jimo District,as an important vegetable planting area, also has a certain scale in Qingdao’s vegetable planting.Jimo District has a rich variety of vegetable crops, and vegetable growers have relatively high incomes. However, there are still some problems, such as uneven resource allocation and an imbalanced ratio of production material inputs, resulting in a significant waste of resources while achieving high profits from vegetable planting.Compared to larger-scale vegetable planting,Jimo District’s vegetable planting is still dominated by small and medium scales, making it difficult to form larger-scale benefits. Therefore, analyzing the efficiency of vegetable planting at different scales and the optimal scale benefits, and summarizing the characteristics of the most efficient vegetable planting households, has guidance significance for the development of vegetable planting in Jimo District. This article uses literature research, questionnaire survey, and data envelopment analysis to summarize and sort out previous research results.Based on field research on vegetable planting in some towns and streets in Jimo District in 2021,the development of vegetable planting in Jimo District is described. On this basis,Jimo District’s vegetable planting scale is divided into 14 groups, and its planting costs and benefits are analyzed.Seven input factors, including seed costs, fertilizer costs, pesticide costs, machinery costs, irrigation costs, labor costs, and land costs, and output factors of income per mu,are selected. The DEA method is used to measure the cost-effectiveness of vegetable planting at 14 different scales. It is found that the most effective state can be achieved in the four range intervals of 20-30 mu,30-40 mu,40-50 mu,and above 50 mu,and improvements are made for non-DEA effective planting scales. After calculating the cost-profit margin of the effective planting scale,it is found that the best cost-profit margin can be achieved in the range of 30-40 mu.Finally, the characteristics of the planting households that achieve the best cost-profit margin are summarized, and policy recommendations are proposed.
