In recent years, the digital economy has flourished and become an important factor to promote economic growth. At present,China is also in the key stage of economic transformation and industrial structure adjustment. However,China’s industrial structure is facing many problems, such as inefficient allocation of production factors, low production efficiency, single industrial structure and low added value of products. The digital economy has given birth to new industries, and the integration with various industries has triggered new industrial changes, which has become a new driving force for the upgrading of industrial structure. Therefore, research on the impact of digital economy on the upgrading of industrial structure is of great significance to the optimization and upgrading of China’s industrial structure and the deep economic development.Firstly, this paper analyzes the impact mechanism of digital economy on industrial structure upgrading from the theoretical level. Then, from the four dimensions of digital infrastructure, digital industrialization, industrial digitalization and digital innovation,we measured and analyzed the development level of China’s digital economy from 2013 to 2020 using entropy method, and studied the time and space evolution of China’s digital economy development level using descriptive statistics, natural breakpoint classification, and Kernel nuclear density estimation methods. Then,it measures and analyzes the upgrading of industrial structure from the two dimensions of industrial structure upgrading and rationalization, and studies the time and space evolution of the level of industrial structure upgrading and rationalization in China. Finally, using the provincial panel data from 2013 to 2020,the paper establishes the mediating effect model, introduces residents’ consumption as the mediating variable, and conducts an empirical analysis on the impact of digital economy development on the upgrading of industrial structure.Through the research, the following conclusions are drawn: 1.The development trend of China’s digital economy is steadily upward, but the development is insufficient and unbalanced, and the development differences among regions are expanding,so there is a "digital divide".2.China’s industrial structure is moving towards upgrading and rationalization, but the upgrading of the industrial structure is insufficient and unbalance, and the regional differences are expanding.3.Digital economy can directly promote the upgrading and rationalization of industrial structure, while digital economy can indirectly promote the upgrading and rationalization of industrial structure by influencing residents’ consumption.4.The impact of digital economy on the upgrading of industrial structure has regional heterogeneity: the promotion of digital economy on the upgrading of industrial structure in the central region is higher than that in the eastern region, while there is no significant promotion in the western region. The role of digital economy in promoting the rationalization of industrial structure in the western region is higher than that in the eastern region, while the role in promoting the rationalization of industrial structure in the central region is not significant. The promotion effect of digital economy on the upgrading and rationalization of industrial structure in regions dominated by the secondary industry is stronger than that in regions dominated by the tertiary industry.Based on this, the corresponding policy recommendations are put forward:Vigorously develop the digital economy;Increase demand side reform and expand consumption;Accelerate the integration of digital economy and traditional industries;Optimize the digital economy development environment.
