Abstract/Summary:
More than half of China’s elderly population live in rural areas, where the issue of mental health and well-being among the elderly is particularly pronounced. While China’s economy has experienced rapid development, rural areas have relatively underdeveloped economies and a large outflow of young labor forces, leading to an increasingly serious problem of elderly isolation in rural areas.Traditional beliefs prioritize material support for the elderly, neglecting their psychological needs. As China achieves a comprehensive victory in poverty alleviation,it is essential to shift focus towards improving the psychological well-being of the elderly in rural areas.S village is a typical hollow village with a high proportion of elderly isolation. This paper aims to analyze the issue of mental health and well-being among the elderly in S village, summarize experiences in promoting social participation among the elderly, and provide new ideas for improving the quality of life for rural elderly. The paper analyzes the issue of mental health and well-being among the elderly in S village from six aspects. The first part introduces the research background, significance, literature review, research framework and methods,as well as the innovation and deficiencies of the paper. The second part presents the theoretical basis of the paper, including Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, social exchange theory, and social ecology theory, and derives a hierarchy of psychological needs for the elderly in this study based on the hierarchy of needs theory. The third part introduces the case, mainly the basic situation and social participation of elderly in S village. The fourth part summarizes the problems in mental health and well-being among the elderly in S village based on an analysis of their current situation and psychological needs, including the lack of psychological comfort, limited social participation activities, negative attitudes towards social participation, and insufficient supply of social and communication needs. The fifth part analyzes the reasons for the issue of mental health and well-being among the elderly in S village from the perspective of social participation, including the supply of social participation resources, social participation awareness and culture, and social participation organization management. The sixth part proposes key strategies for addressing the issue of mental health and well-being among the elderly in S village, including increasing self-support awareness, enhancing social participation, improving infrastructure, innovating psychological care services, and clarifying government functions to cultivate social organizations. The elderly themselves are the core of mental health and well-being,the village community is the foundation, social organizations are the support, and the township government is the guarantee. The four aspects need to be combined to truly improve the mental health and well-being of the elderly in S village and help them achieve "adequate care and happiness in old age".
