In the context of the transition from high growth rate development to high quality development, urbanization by outward expansion is no longer sustainable, and urban renewal has become an important development tool for metropolitan cities to change from "incremental expansion" to "inventory upgrading".As a comprehensive systemic project, urban renewal includes not only the transformation and upgrading of physical space, but also the shaping of cultural and spiritual space and the readjustment of social relations, which will undoubtedly affect the social integration of migrant groups in the transformation area. Therefore, this study adopts a qualitative research method to analyze the social integration of migrant groups living in the renovated areas through fieldwork and semi-structured interviews, and from the perspectives of spatial production theory, urban rights theory, social integration theory and social exclusion theory. To explore the impact of urban renewal on migrants’ social integration. In the urban renewal practice of Guangzhou,micro-renovation and full-scale renovation are the two mainstream renovation modes with significant characteristic differences,so this study accordingly selects renovation areas that conform to both types for field research. This study found that the impact of urban renewal on migrants’ social integration is mainly reflected in three dimensions: economic integration, community integration and cultural and psychological integration.Through the research and analysis of the micro-renovation areas,we found that the impact of urban renewal on the economic integration of migrants lies in the upgrading of informal housing and the remediation of the informal economy;the impact on the community integration of migrants lies in the accessibility of community public services and the participation in the management of community activities;the impact on the cultural and psychological integration of migrants lies in the adaptation of humanistic values and the formation of a sense of belonging to the community.Through the research and analysis of the Full-scale renovated areas,we found that the impact of urban renewal on the economic integration of migrants lies in the eviction of tenants without property rights and the adjustment of the business and employment environment;the impact on the integration of immigrant communities lies in the reconstruction of social networks and the redistribution of spatial resources;the impact on the cultural and psychological integration of migrants lies in the perception of community distance and the acceptance of citizenship. In the process of urban renewal, migrants also face certain risks of social integration, such as the risk of marginalization of living space, the risk of stratification of community life and the risk of disintegration of social networks, which leads to the failure of social integration. Therefore,in the process of urban renewal, the core interests of migrants’ social integration should be respected, which include affordable housing and daily living costs, shared community space and public services, and expandable social capital and development opportunities.Based on the urban renewal background and research analysis, this paper concludes with countermeasure suggestions to promote the social integration of migrants at three levels, including the mechanism level, the planning level, and the governance level.
