| With the deepening of the global value chain production division system and the substantial increase in the scale and structure of service trade, the importance of service elements in creating value and coordinating production and operations in the GVC has become increasingly prominent.Expanding service trade opening and accelerating manufacturing transformation and upgrading have become China’s strategic means and strategic goals for promoting high-quality trade development at this stage.Based on the trend of deep integration of manufacturing and service industries, service trade liberalization has brought about new vitality to the production and operation activities of manufacturing enterprises by introducing foreign investment in the service sector and expanding the import of knowledge-intensive services to adjust the structure of the service market.Whether manufacturing enterprises can improve their core competitiveness in the division of labor across the value chain and get rid of the low-end lock-in dilemma in the process of service trade liberalization is a major challenge facing the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, therefore, exploring the relationship between service trade liberalization and global value chains has important theoretical and practical significance.Research from the micro-level perspective of enterprises is more conducive to the layout of service trade opening policies, and provides practical application for manufacturing enterprises to break low-end lock-in.The full researching article is divided into six chapters, study the specific effects and internal impact mechanisms of service trade liberalization to enhance the position of manufacturing enterprises’ value chain on the basis of theoretical framework construction and empirical analysis. The core content consists of theoretical combing, data calculation, status quo analysis and empirical testing. The status quo part uses the World Bank STRI database, the WIOD world input-output table, matching data based on China customs import and export database and China industrial enterprise database to respectively calculate the degree of service trade liberalization in 18 manufacturing industries and the position of enterprises’ value chain index under the ISIC-Rev.4 classification from 2000 to 2013.The degree and the position index of the enterprise value chain provide a preliminary understanding of the changing trend of service trade liberalization and the position of the manufacturing enterprise value chain. The empirical part is based on the measurement data to construct a measurement model for empirical analysis.Through robustness test, endogenous test, heterogeneity analysis, and influence mechanism analysis to explore and examine the impact of service trade liberalization on the position of the manufacturing companies value chain in multiple dimensions. The research results show that: First, the liberalization of service trade can significantly promote the position of manufacturing enterprises in the GVC.The greater the extent of service trade liberalization, the higher the position of manufacturing enterprises in the value chain, and this influence slowed down as the degree of trade liberalization increased.Second, the effect of service trade liberalization on the position of manufacturing enterprises in the value chain has obvious heterogeneity, which is mainly reflected in the heterogeneity of service industries, enterprise technology types, enterprise spatial distribution, and enterprise trade methods.Third, the liberalization of trade in services helps manufacturing enterprise increase their position in the value chain through technological innovation and cost reduction channels, among which cost reduction has a more significant effect. The above results indicate that China should encourage the liberalization of service trade, insist on promoting a coordinated and orderly liberalization process of service trade, and build an open layout of service trade with obvious primary and secondary relationships and moderate spatial and regional regulation. The manufacturing and service industries should be under the effect of industrial linkages.Coordinated development promotes the upward movement of manufacturing enterprises in the value chain. It is worth noting that if manufacturing companies escape from the low-end lock-in dilemma of the value chain, they cannot rely too much on the policy of service trade liberalization.Intensifying manufacturing companies’ independent R&D capabilities and technological innovation are the keys to embed in high value-added production. |
