Framing Of Chinese Infrastructure Development In Kenya

China’s engagement in the Infrastructure in Kenya has attracted global attention since it enhances Chinese influence in Kenya and Africa.The news Framing of Chinese Infrastructure Development in Kenya by CNN,CGTN,and the local Kenyan SMG media plays a significant role in shaping general understanding and attitude towards the Chinese people and their Government.This is because infrastructure development concerns the Kenyan economic aspect of development with the ability to put Kenya on the global map.International media play a significant role in covering news around the world.Particularly,they played a significant role in the conduct of this content analysis on framing on Chinese infrastructure development in Kenya.The study was guided by framing theory and media development theory and the researcher adopted qualitative research design and analysis method through content analysis and in-depth interviews.The study relied on news collected from April 1st,2022 – April 1st,2023,mainly from CNN,CGTN,and the local Kenyan SMG media news sources.During the period,70 news stories were sampled from the three media organizations,collected,and analyzed using content analysis.The study also conducted interviews from editors,journalists,and other analysists to determine their coverage on the Chinese infrastructure development in Kenya.This qualitative content analysis focused on negative,positive,and neutral tones and economic frame,responsibility frame,need frame,and conflict frames and collected news stories based on the same.The findings of the study shows that majority of the stories were reporting about Chinese infrastructure developments in Kenya in positive tones(51.43%),followed by negative tones(32.86%),and neutral tones(15.7%).The study further finds that CGTN and SMG media mainly reported in positive tones while CNN reported in negative tones.In conclusion,international media mainly view Chinese infrastructure developments in Kenya positively.
