The current research on intergenerational family communication in China mainly focuses on two levels: family structure and inter generational relationships, lacking a dynamic communication perspective. To make up for the shortcomings of domestic research on intergenerational family communication, this article takes the children of Generation Z college students(born in 1995-2009)and their parents as research objects, and uses We Chat platform as a reference to conduct research on intergenerational family communication in media settings, combining quantitative and qualitative research,A total of 721 parents and 732 children questionnaires were collected, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 groups of Gen Z college students’ families to collect scientific and detailed data. This article uses We Chat usage and intergenerational family communication as two main variables to investigate the We Chat usage of Generation Z college students’ children and parents,It uses SPSS software to analyze sample data, explore the influencing factors of intergenerational family communication on We Chat platform, analyze the current situation of intergenerational family communication on We Chat platform through in-depth interviews, and focus on exploring the effectiveness of intergenerational family communication on We Chat platform and related issues,And provide relevant optimization strategies for the healthy development of intergenerational family communication in media situations. The study found that there is a significant difference between the gender variables of demographic factors in the parent group and the effect of intergenerational family communication. The educational qualifications of both parties have an impact on the effect of intergenerational family communication, and We Chat use function, degree of use, motivation, and digital feedback have a significant positive impact on the effect of intergenerational family communication.Based on interviews,it can be seen that generation Z college students’ children and parents communicate frequently on We Chat, with the main content of chatting about daily life, and the main channels of communication are through voice and video call functions. On the one hand, the intergenerational family communication of We Chat platform has shown the following positive effects: We Chat has had a relatively obvious effect on deepening the intimate relationship between generations; When conflicts arise between generations,We Chat provides a space for both parties to ease their emotions and promote mutual understanding; The emergence of digital feedback has enabled children to achieve technological empowerment and family discourse power to move downward. On the other hand, there are also the following problems in the intergenerational family communication of We Chat platform: less communication between parents and children;Reduced sharing time for real families;Expanding personal privacy space;Information feedback is ignored.Based on this, this article proposes the following optimization strategies: Parents should enhance the awareness of the main body of communication and avoid the absence of a communication model;Reduce media dependence and strengthen deep communication;Parents respect their children’s personal privacy boundaries and cultivate an open family communication culture;Establish an information feedback mechanism and democratically negotiate the content of the communication process;Children help their parents improve their media literacy and jointly bridge the digital generation gap.
