The Impact Of Family Communication Patterns On Family Cohesion In The Digital Age

Family communication patterns has an important impact on individual's interaction behavior and mental health,which has rich results in the study of family communication patterns.When individuals reach emerging adulthood,they often experience the incoordination of real identity,ideal self,and the identity of their selves in the eyes of family members.These identity gaps also have a potential impact on individuals' daily relationships and behaviors.Previous studies have shown that individual identity gaps can mediate the relationship between family communication patterns and individual-family interactions in American family.With the development of the Internet,digital feedback has become an important part of family interactions.Therefore,this article further extends the interaction between individuals and families as family cohesion,and explore how the family communication patterns affects family cohesion through the mediation role of identity differences and the moderation of family identification in the digital age.Based on previous research,this paper established a conditional process model on family communication patterns,individual identity gaps,family identification and family cohesion through a questionnaire survey of college students(N=221),and explored how family communication patterns affect individual identity gaps,family identification and family cohesion.The study found that the influence of family communication patterns on family cohesion is mediated by individual identity gaps and moderated by family identification.Specifically,the conversation orientation is conducive to the development of an individual 's true self and ideal self.In this case,the relationship between the individual and the family is closer,and the family identification is also higher.They will actively contact with their parents,provide care support,economic support and digital feedback to their parents,so family cohesion will be enhanced;conformity orientation leads to a gap between the individual's real self and ideal self,the individual cannot be the true self in the family,their family identification declines,there will be no more investment in family relations.Accordingly,the individual 's emotional connection and intergenerational support for family members(including parents)will be reduced,and family cohesion will be weakened.In addition,from the perspective of family communication patterns,this article discusses strategies to further enhance family cohesion and family interaction behaviors by combining individual identity gaps and family identification.
