Repression And Resistance:An Analysis Of Women’s Discourse On People Magazine’s WeChat Official Account

Nowadays,the status of women has been greatly improved than before.However,in the new social context,women still face some invisible gender bias,and women’s issues are increasingly discussed on the Internet.Based on this,this study explores women’s discourse in "People" from the perspective of how professional media guides the value of gender issues,with the aim of exploring the power suppression encountered by women and the discourse game presented.This study uses python to crawl the articles of People magazine from 2018-2021 and screen the stories involving women in them one by one.Then we analyze the women’s discourse in People at three levels: women’s bodies are repressed by power,women’s oral narratives,and women’s resistance,with the help of textual and discourse analysis methods.From the two key dimensions of Foucault’s "micro-power" and "discourse and power," the study explores the repression of power,discipline and resistance involved in the women’s reports in People.The study finds that People reproduces the risk of violence and the hidden risk of women’s bodies being repressed by the discourse of power.Women at risk of violence are subject to discursive violence,which manifests itself in the form of condemning female victims and putting them in front of the stage.In terms of resistance to discursive violence,People achieves resistance to discursive violence by placing the topic of violence in the public space for discussion,calling for the attention of society as a whole,and protecting victims;in the risk of maternity,the discussion of women’s childbirth is in a vacuum,shaping women’s childbirth as a natural thing.In Hidden Risks,the "superhero image" of working mothers and the over-valuing of women’s appearance are discussed.At the level of women’s oral narratives,"People" shows how women are disciplined in their upbringing.Although they are disciplined,women’s sense of resistance to traditional stereotypes can be found;"People" presents a rich variety of female relationships,specifically new sisterhood and mother-daughter relationships.In the mother-daughter relationship,People presents a rich and diverse mother-daughter relationship,changing the image of mother’s devotion and sacrifice.On the level of women’s resistance,it shows women’s resistance by negotiating gender boundaries and reconstructing women’s identity and gender concepts.The reconstruction of women’s identity is not only reflected in women’s liberation from the stereotypical image of mothers and wives,but also in the awakening of women’s self-awareness,and secondly,in the gender power relations between the two genders.By studying the articles in People that deal with marriage between the two sexes,we find that the traditional power relationship between the two sexes is gradually shrinking,in which women show their resistance to the traditional concept of marriage;in terms of gender concept,there are "both men and women are the same" and "like women" in People."In terms of gender concepts,there is an interweaving of two gender concepts,both of which constitute a rebellion against traditional gender concepts.Women’s repression and resistance are intertwined,constituting the female discourse of People.Through the study of People,this study analyzes the gender concepts and power relations reflected in it,with the ultimate goal of calling for and advocating the elimination of hidden gender discrimination and striving to build a society of gender harmony and equality.
