| In the wake of swift iterations of media technology, the daily lives of individuals have also been continuously rewritten.Video is preferred by a substantial number of users as a result of its wealth of sensuality.Nevertheless,a significant number of users lend their resistance to visual hegemony and select audio to record their daily lives or output their viewpoints, while demonstrating themselves in podcast programs through their voices. With the heartfelt performances of podcast creators, listeners are once again brought to appreciate the value of sound. In Dramaturgy,Goffman pointed out that individuals perform various self-presentations in different arenas. The audio medium provided by podcasts also serves as a new stage in the Internet context,in which creators perform self-presentation in a way that is primarily audio and graphically supplemented.By taking podcast creators as the research subjects, this paper probes the self-presentation of podcast creators in their podcast programs from self-presentation theory. The qualitative research method of participant observation and in-depth interviews is employed to conduct online interviews with 10 podcast creators, while adding their listener groups to observe their extended stages. An attempt was taken to clarify the meaningful construction of the stage and performance of podcast creators,as well as their selves. This study first composes the relevant researches on selfpresentation and podcasting,as well as clarifies the history and evolution of self-presentation theory, followed by a generalization of the selfpresentation characteristics of podcast creators on the basis of the interview contents. The podcast creators have achieved the liberation of the discourse of the coders, allowing for a new voice of self-expression.Through the interaction between the podcast programs and the listeners,a contextualized soundscape is constructed, while the podcast community allows for a new type of socialization between the creators and the listeners,in which the physical absence and emotional presence are established. In addition, the self-presentation of podcast creators is analyzed. When podcast creators perform their self-presentation,the background music is primarily employed as a foreground aid, whose fixed stage installation is the Show Notes that every program features.Despite the limited parts that can be decorated for it,the creators have all endeavored to achieve excellence for a favorable user experience. The prolonged and continuous romp between the anchor and the guest also allows the creator to abandon the backstage cover-up,whereby what the listener hears is the reality. On this basis, this paper concludes that the meaningful construction of their self-presentation lies in the coconstruction of the drama class of the spiritual community,as well as the self-identity formed during the interaction process, which in turn leads to the reshaping of the self.Lastly,it is suggested that the application of technology, community and IP creation can facilitate a more perfect selfpresentation of podcast creators. |
