| The pick-up artist(PUA)hiding in the intimate relationship achieves the purpose of emotional manipulation by implementing emotional manipulation and even encouraging each other to commit suicide. In recent years, the social malignant events caused by PUA have become more and more serious, which has attracted extensive attention and reports from the media, especially the online media.Exploring the presentation of PUA issue by online media,on the one hand, helps to understand the characteristics of PUA issue presented by the media. On the other hand,we can understand the reporting practice of PUA issue by online media from the perspective of editing business norms and reporting ethics norms.Using the content analysis method and based on the three-level theory of news framework, news ethics and editing norms, this study analyzes and evaluates 381 PUA issue reports released by 20 domestic online media(including 10 mainstream media and 10 commercial media). The results show that:(1)in terms of event characteristics, the harm strategies of PUA mainly include "impression management" and "emotional abuse"."psychological trauma" and "suicide",which are the most common consequences of PUA.The reports of PUA highlight "drama" and "significance";(2)In terms of the characteristics of the main body of the incident, the perpetrators in the PUA report are mainly "men" and "the young",and the victims are mostly "women","the young" and "working group".There are some problems, such as gender stereotypes, narrowing the concept of "victim" and lack of attention to minors;(3)In terms of news gathering and editing and ethical norms, most of them focus on face-to-face interviews, and "victims" are the main source of information. There are problems such as secondary harm of the media and excessive disclosure of "sex and violence".By further comparing the reporting differences between mainstream media and commercial media,it can be seen that:(4)compared with mainstream media, commercial media disclose more privacy such as event subject information and chat records, involve more public figures and use more human framework. This study explores the presentation and normative issues of online media reporting on PUA issues, and expands PUA-related research from the field of news dissemination. In a practical sense, the study points out the imbalance in the current online media presentation of PUA issues, narrowing the "objective truth",highlighting "drama" and "significance",privacy violations and media secondary harm, lack of "constructive" elements, and puts forward the following suggestions for improvement:Mainstream media should strengthen reporting and public opinion guidance on PUA issues, expand the dimension of issue reporting, and enhance the constructiveness of news.Commercial media should avoid news entertainment, weaken the saliency and drama of PUA issue reporting, and avoid secondary harm to the media. In addition,we should strengthen the supervision of network information and formulate relevant reporting norms and guidelines, and effectively regulate the content presentation and dissemination of PUA issues. |
