Since the 18th century,South Africa has gradually become a colony of the Netherlands,Britain and other Western countries,and the cultural development of South Africa has also been affected by colonialism after it became a colony.The publication of South African English literature books accounts for the vast majority of domestic book publications in South Africa,which can be used as a direct expression carrier of the influence of colonialism on South African culture.This research cuts from the perspective of post-colonialism,based on the views of two post-colonialists,Edward Waefie Said and Homi K.Bhabha.As the research object,34 classic South African English literature books,their publishers,publication time and other information were screened and sorted to analyze the characteristics of South African English literature book publishing culture in different stages.This research uses the method of literature and case and empirical analysis,combined with the political background of South Africa,to sort out and analyze the development process and characteristics of South African English literature book publishing culture.The publishing of English literature books in South Africa can be summarized into four stages of development:(1)In the second half of the 19th century,cultural imperialism appeared in publishing culture;(2)In the early 20th century,the "dual opposition" of publishing culture under the intensified colonial violence;(3)In the middle of the 20th century,the "exile" state of publishing culture after the apartheid policy was intensified;(4)After the 21st century,the "simulation and dialogue" of publishing culture in the democratic period.In general,the English literature book publishing culture in South Africa presents the following states and characteristics:(1)Since South Africa was colonized,it has been under the shadow of colonialism;(2)During the development process from the colonial period to the democratic period,there are It is in line with Said’s view that the process of cultural integration under the control of colonialism is dynamic;(3)after entering the democratic period,it reveals the tendency of integration and pluralistic development with the publishing culture of colonial countries trend.Based on the development process and characteristics of South African English literature book publishing culture,this research finds that:(1)Although in the middle of the 20th century when the apartheid policy was intensified,the book publishing culture of South African English literature was already in a state of confrontation with colonialism.The dialogue between Lower South Africa and the former metropolitan country played a certain role in promoting the English literature book publishing culture;(2)until the beginning of the 21st century when South Africa initially entered the democratic period,its English literature book publishing culture was still obviously influenced by colonialism,and there were still The characteristics of the confrontation between the local culture and the culture of the suzerain country have also verified some relevant viewpoints of post-colonialism theory,which is innovative.This research verifies some relevant viewpoints of post-colonialism theory,which is innovative to a certain extent.It is helpful for the academic circle to deeply understand and criticize the historical stage of Western culture gradually occupying the status of mainstream culture in the world along with the development of colonialism,especially the way of,means,steps,etc.have certain practical significance. |
