As an important immigrant country, the convergence and integration of different cultures has made New Zealand culture a rich, diverse and vibrant cultural phenomenon.Over the centuries,New Zealand has not only been influenced by European civilization, but also the indigenous Maori culture has been deeply implanted in the soil of New Zealand culture, together with the influx of immigrants from other countries, making the ancient Maori culture, the transplanted European culture and the new native culture intermingle to form the unique New Zealand multiculturalism. Its cultural development and New Zealand’s colonial history go hand in hand, and like other colonized countries, most of them have gone through the stage of"suppression-resistance-conflict-integration",and the development of globalization Nowadays,it has become a pluralistic form of harmonious coexistence of various cultures. However,New Zealand’s nearly 70 years of colonial experience has caused a great impact on its cultural subjectivity, and in the collision between strong English culture and weak native culture,New Zealand’s multiculturalism has taken on an independent and dependent post-colonial character. From a communication perspective, colonization is not only about politics, but also a communication phenomenon, and in the same way, communication is a way of constructing cultural perceptions. In the case of New Zealand, the medium of publication has been present throughout the process of its cultural development. It can provide a unique perspective on the role of different cultural powers in the development process from the level of the history of publishing development, and thus sort out the history of the formation of multiculturalism in New Zealand, and also provide a deeper view of the history of the game of different values behind it.Based on the publishing perspective, this paper will take the history of New Zealand publishing and its publications as the main object of study, and adopt the research methods of documentary research and quantitative analysis to conduct a post-colonial analysis on the one hand, and on the other hand, conduct a systematic and in-depth analysis based on the cultural development and cultural tendencies of New Zealand as reflected in the publishing perspective,so as to investigate the essence of New Zealand’s unique multicultural pattern. On the other hand,a systematic and in-depth analysis is conducted to examine the essence of New Zealand’s unique multicultural pattern, based on both the development of New Zealand culture and the tendency of cultural connotations reflected in the publishing perspective. The study shows that the formation of multiculturalism in New Zealand has gone through the generation of colonial culture under British hegemony, the generation of "mock" culture under the mutual struggle and identification of different cultural subjects in the process of decolonization, and finally the realization of a multicultural system under the mingling and fusion of different cultures in cultural forms, which embodies the post-colonial characteristics of independence and dependence. However, the cultural development pattern of New Zealand presented in the analysis of New Zealand publications is "westernized",revealing that the essence of its multiculturalism is still only the addition of diversity in form, but not the equal integration in content. This paper develops the study of multiculturalism in New Zealand in two main sections. One is an analysis of New Zealand’s colonial history and the history of book printing and publishing based on a postcolonial theoretical perspective, which takes a more in-depth view of the development of New Zealand’s unique multicultural system and unveils the British colonial hypocrisy, and also further explores the relationship between the shaping of its multicultural pattern and postcoloniality.Secondly,we take publications as a cut-off point to deeply study the connotation of New Zealand’s cultural values and their tendencies in order to explore the essential characteristics of New Zealand’s cultural development pattern.First,by collecting and crawling the publication data of New Zealand between 1920 and 2020,and then introducing the index of the number of book reprints to categorize the books,we effectively measure the cultural value of New Zealand’s published books from a perspective different from that of economic indicators such as book sales, and select the classic books that reflect the changes of New Zealand’s cultural development, and analyze the general trends and specific cases in order to present We will also analyze the general trends and specific case studies of these books,in order to present the substantial characteristics of the "Westernization" of New Zealand’s multicultural landscape. In general, the development of publishing in New Zealand is a microcosm of its cultural development.Taking this as the perspective, and combining it with post-colonial theory,we analyze the historical lineage and content tendencies of the formation of multiculturalism in New Zealand,in order to reveal the essence of New Zealand’s cultural pluralism in form but not in content.
