As a builder of urban identity,museums use their collections as intermediaries to disseminate information to the outside world through building cultural media spaces and opening up major communication channels,connecting individuals with the city,awakening audiences’ personal memories and the collective memory of the city,stimulating the imagination of identity,promoting audiences’ sense of belonging and identification with the city,and facilitating audiences’ construction of the identity between themselves and the city in different cultural contexts.Using the Kaifeng Museum as a case study,this study examines how the Kaifeng Museum promotes and strengthens urban identity in its communication through questionnaires,in-depth interviews and field surveys.The study finds that the Kaifeng Museum,as a concentrated place of Kaifeng city culture and a new window of urban communication,provides texts and spaces for strengthening urban identity while affirming and spreading Kaifeng culture,using objects as intermediaries to facilitate communication between the city and its audiences,helping audiences to seek symbols of identity representation and strengthening the confirmation of self-identity and a sense of belonging to the city.Firstly,the Kaifeng Museum is a landmark of Kaifeng city,enabling audiences to establish a local identity that is ’distinct’ from others,and then through the shape of the building,the exhibition of objects and spatial communication to showcase Kaifeng’s urban development and cultural memory,inspiring space for identity,building a bridge between individual and collective memory,and building The museum is a community of imagination.Secondly,museums are all about ’storytelling’.The Kaifeng Museum has opened several social media accounts and organised various educational activities and academic lectures to interact with audiences,focusing on their cultural needs,stimulating their emotions and deepening their identification with the city of Kaifeng.Finally,identity is the basis for consumption.The Kaifeng Museum cooperates with Byte Jump across borders to create a cultural and creative brand,using cultural and creative products as an intermediary to convey the city’s identity;and the audience uses the act of cultural and creative consumption to express their cultural identification with Kaifeng city.Although the Kaifeng Museum’s information dissemination has to a certain extent strengthened the identification with Kaifeng city,there are still problems in the communication system such as homogenisation of platform content,lack of audience experience and insufficient innovation in cultural creation.Therefore,the Kaifeng Museum,as a medium to strengthen the city’s identity in the development of Kaifeng city,should make full use of cultural resources in the future dissemination of the city’s identity,make good use of the development opportunities brought by the Internet,strengthen the identity between the audience and the city in multiple dimensions,unite the spirit of the city,inherit the Kaifeng culture,and promote the better development of Kaifeng.
