Leisure life is an important part of non-formal education, and children are the most important subjects in their own leisure life. How to improve and refine the leisure life of rural older children requires adults to listen to children’s perspectives and to achieve communication and understanding between adult and child perspectives. This study uses interview and work analysis methods to study 21 older children and 15 parents of older children in Kindergarten A in Village L in order to explore the leisure life of older children in rural areas from both children’s and adults’ perspectives. The responses of the children and parents were analyzed through a rooting method to compare the similarities and differences of the perspectives from the two perspectives and to make suggestions for improving the leisure life of rural children. The findings were summarized into six aspects: leisure time, leisure space, leisure activities, leisure partners, children’s roles, and the ideal leisure life of young children. The study found that(1)there are many commonalities between the leisure life of rural older children from the child’s perspective and the adult’s perspective.First, academic activities are important factors affecting leisure time;second, family places and community activity places are the most important leisure spaces for young children;third, recreational activities are the most important leisure activities for young children;fourth, peer partners are the leisure partners with the highest quality of companionship;and fifth, young children belong to the role of negotiators in their own leisure activities.(2)There are several differences between the two perspectives.First, children and parents have different understandings of the concept of leisure time, and the adult perspective has a broader range of leisure time for rural older children;second, the two sides have different attitudes toward academic learning activities, and children do not consider academic learning activities to be leisure activities;third, the two sides disagree on the most important leisure partners for children, with children considering peer partners to be the most important leisure partners and parents considering mothers to be the most important leisure partners for children.(3)Comparing rural children’s leisure time with their mothers’ leisure time(3)Comparing the leisure life of rural children with that of urban children,in addition to the common features that leisure time is influenced by academic activities and leisure activities are mainly recreational activities, the leisure life of rural children also has special features such as more sufficient leisure time, restricted leisure space, less structured leisure activities, rich peer group interaction, and children’s greater autonomy over their own leisure life.In view of the shortcomings of the leisure life of rural children, the following suggestions are made to parents:(1)Update the concept of education and correctly view "preschool education" and "leisure".(2)Strengthen the communication with children at the spiritual level to understand their true feelings. The following suggestions are made to kindergartens and communities:(1)Kindergarten teachers should strengthen their policy and theoretical studies, and strengthen family education guidance.(2)Improve the external conditions of children’s leisure life and enrich their leisure life.(3)Strengthen supervision and rectify the phenomenon of primary schooling in kindergartens. |
