After the “Reducing the Burden of Homework and Off-campus Training ” policy was promulgated, the importance of family education became increasingly prominent. Many studies have found that the quality of family education has an important impact on children’s personality development, cognitive development, and socialization, and parental education concepts are important factors that determine the quality of family education. Therefore, understanding the education concept of families from different levels and its impact on students’ academic achievements in the current social context has important practical significance. This paper attempts to explore three questions:Firstly, what are the characteristics of parental educational concepts in Chinese society? Secondly, whether there is a class difference in parental education concept in China? Thirdly, whether there is an influence of parental education concept on children’s academic achievement? In this thesis, junior high school students of grades 6-8 in Shanghai and their parents were selected as the research object.Through the sorting and analysis of questionnaire data and interview data, this paper conducted a survey on the education concepts of parents from different levels and their children’s academic achievements. The research found: Firstly, most parents value their role in educating children, and they are willing to learn methods of education as well as willing to communicate with their children equally. They also have high expectations for their children’s academic achievements.According to cluster analysis, the educational concepts can be divided into three types: low expectation-high responsiveness type, high expectation-high responsiveness type and low expectation-low responsiveness type.Among them, the high expectation-high responsiveness type has the largest number of people, and the low expectation-low responsiveness type has the smallest number;Secondly, there are significant differences in parental education concept among different classes. The education concept of parents from the high class tends to be low expectation-high responsiveness type, the education concept of parents from the middle class tends to be high expectation-high responsiveness type and the education concept of parents from the low class tends to be low expectation-low responsiveness type.Lastly, parental education concept impacts the academic achievement of junior middle school students.Education concept of low expectation-high responsiveness type is positively associated with academic achievement whereas low expectation-low responsiveness type has adverse effects.Furthermore, the concept of the way to become a talent, the concept of educational methods and children’s rights and status are three important factors that affect the academic achievement of junior high school students.Based on the interview content, using the theory of social stratification, cultural capital and family system, this paper found that due to different occupations and social status, there are differences among parents from different levels in terms of educational self-efficacy,educational expectations, and family-school interaction. These factors can affect their family education concepts and methods, and then affect students’ academic achievements.Based on the research results, this thesis puts forward countermeasures from the three levels of government, schools and parents. This paper hopes to display all quarters’ positive role to popularize scientific education concepts and methods to parents and formulate family-school cooperation models based on the needs and characteristics of different families, providing more support, consultation and intervention to disadvantaged families.
