Where the eyes can not see,reading can.Where the steps cannot be measured,reading can.Senior grades in primary school are the key period to form a good habit of reading,extracurricular reading is important for primary students to cultivate their interest,broaden the horizons,improve the quality of morality,inherit Chinese excellent culture and promote national literacy.Since the 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC),Nationwide Reading has become an important measure to build China into a modern socialist country.Nationwide Reading has been written in the government work report every year continuously since 2014.Senior students in rural primary schools are an important group to promote the realization of the Nationwide Reading goal,but the current situation of their extracurricular reading is not ideal.Therefore,the research on extracurricular reading of senior students in rural primary schools is very important.This study first introduces the reason and significance of the topic,the research status at home and abroad,core concepts,theoretical basis and research methods.Secondly,the current situation of extracurricular reading of high-grade students in rural primary schools is investigated through literature research,questionnaire survey,interview and observation.The questionnaire mainly investigated students in grade 5 and 6 of two primary schools in D Town from six dimensions: extracurricular reading motivation,extracurricular reading types,extracurricular reading supports,extracurricular reading methods,extracurricular reading time and extracurricular reading effects.In addition,three teachers and five parents were selected from the two primary schools for interviews,researcher observed the reading environments in schools,families and communities.Through the analysis of the survey results,it is found that there are some weaknesses in extracurricular reading of the senior students in the two primary schools in D Town: students’ initiative in extracurricular reading is not strong;single type of extracurricular reading;poor support for extracurricular reading;students’ reading methods are inappropriate;not enough time and amounts of extracurricular reading.In view of these problems,the reasons are analyzed from the five levels of students,teachers,parents,schools and society,and the following recommendations for improvement are put forward.Firstly,at students level,raise awareness of reading and enhance extracurricular reading initiative;use the Internet properly and resist its bad influences.Secondly,at teachers level,teachers should improve reading guidance ability and carry out a variety of reading activities;combine classroom teaching with extracurricular reading and arrange special reading hours.Thirdly,at parents level,parents should read together with children to create a good family reading environment;renew ideas and promote home-school cooperation.Fourthly,at schools level,increase financial input and build campus reading environment;employ full-time staff to improve utilization rate of school library;establish evaluation mechanism and play the guiding role of evaluation.Fifthly,at the social level,pay more attention to reading and carry out community reading activities;increase the publicity of reading and strengthen the construction of reading facilities.
