Abstract/Summary:
In the 2008 financial crisis, the economic aggregate declined significantly,a large number of enterprises closed down, and the unemployment rate increased significantly. At the same time,it was accompanied by social unrest and even the turbulence of the country’s political structure. In 2020,the widespread spread of the COVID-19 has led to a downturn in the market, and the external market demand has been impacted, which has had a long-term negative impact.Under the complex and volatile external environment,it is particularly important for Chinese enterprises to maintain their export resilience. With the development of the global technological revolution and the construction of a new development pattern,AI has highlighted its cross-era significance. All countries and government units have incorporated it into the national strategy and important track. As the country with the largest manufacturing industry,China’s integration of AI and manufacturing to promote industrial upgrading is a key step in promoting the development of foreign trade. In this context,it has become a very important topic to explore whether the deep integration of AI and the real economy can enhance the export resilience of enterprises and achieve the breakthrough of foreign trade against the trend. The article uses the data of China’s robots officially published by the International Federation of Robotics,as well as the matching data of the data of China’s listed enterprises and the data of China’s customs import and export trade from 2008 to2016,taking the 2008 financial crisis as the research background, and from the perspective of risk resilience, examines the impact of AI on the export resilience of enterprises under external shocks. The empirical results show that the development of AI has significantly promoted the risk resilience of Chinese enterprises, that is,export resilience. This conclusion is still valid after the robustness tests such as bilateral tail reduction, replacement of the explained variables and supplement of the missing variables, and also passes the endogenous test after using the "Next Generation Internet Demonstration City Construction" to construct the instrumental variables.Secondly, through the mechanism test,it is found that the effect of AI on improving the export resilience of enterprises is mainly achieved by improving the total factor productivity of enterprises. Finally, the heterogeneity analysis shows that the promotion effect of AI on the export resilience of enterprises significantly exists in non-state-owned enterprises,large-scale enterprises and enterprises located in coastal cities.
