The gender wage gap in the labor market has been a hot topic for economists and policymakers.Traditional studies mostly focus on the labor market to explore the causes of the gender wage gap.In fact, the division of labor in the household domain is also an important explanatory factor.Existing studies analyzing the influence of housework on the gender wage gap mainly focus on the influence of housework hours on wages. However, this paper focuses on the marginal influence of housework on wages, which also has gender differences, and explores and identifies its influence path and mechanism. This paper provides a new explanation for the causes of the gender wage gap in the labor market, helps us better understand the hidden gender inequality, more objectively define gender discrimination, and has important implications for further improving the gender equality policy. On the basis of literature research, this paper, based on the data of China Family Panel Survey(CFPS),uses the fixed effect model and instrumental variable method to find that there is a significant gender difference in the marginal influence of housework on wages.Compared with men, every 1% increase in housework has a 7.6% more negative impact on women’s wages.Women’s wages were more sensitive to housework time, and the results held up after the robustness test.In the heterogeneity analysis, the negative effect of housework on wages and the degree of gender difference are different in urban and rural areas, also different in higher education samples and lower education samples. The influence of urban samples and higher educational samples is more significant.Further analysis suggests that the source of the gender difference may be due to the different types of housework undertaken by men and women.Compared with men who take on more non-routine and nonweekday housework, women who take on more routine and weekday housework are more strongly constrained in their energy allocation and time flexibility,so they choose jobs with higher flexibility, which affects their wages and incomes. In summary, the gender difference in the division of housework is one of the important reasons for the gender wage gap in the labor market.Based on the above conclusions, this paper proposes the following policy suggestions.1.Recognize the value of housework and improve the compensation system of housework.2.Vigorously develop family service industry and provide more support and guidance.3.Make more family-friendly policies.4.Encourage employers to implement work-family balance plans.
