With the continuous progress and development of the economy and society,a series of population structure issues such as imbalanced population development, increasing population aging, widening urbanrural gap,and differences in population cultural level are becoming increasingly prominent. There is an inherent correlation between population structure and economic development, and the two are interrelated and interact with each other. How to promote coordinated development between population structure and economic development is an important issue that urgently needs to be solved to promote China’s economic development, and it is also one of the issues that scholars at home and abroad are generally concerned about. The digital economy is an important component of China’s economy,a key driving force for stable economic growth, and plays a leading and supporting role in economic and social development.Studying the relationship between population structure and the level of digital economy development is an important proposition for promoting the development of China’s digital economy. This article takes the population structure and digital economy of various provinces and cities in China as the research object, collects timeseries samples from 2013 to 2021,and constructs a population structure evaluation system and a digital economy development level evaluation system based on the definition of population structure and the frequency of digital economy evaluation indicators. The VHSD method is used to determine the weight of the indicators, and the population structure and digital economy development level index of various provinces and cities in China are calculated.Firstly, the population structure index of various provinces and cities in China was calculated from five aspects: population cultural structure, population urban-rural structure, population gender structure, population industrial structure, and population age structure,to explore the characteristics of population structure changes in various provinces and cities in China.Secondly, the development level of the digital economy in various provinces and cities in China is analyzed from three aspects: digital infrastructure construction, digital application development, and digital industrialization development. The spatiotemporal characteristics of the development level of the digital economy are depicted from two aspects, and the reasons for its heterogeneity are analyzed.Next,by establishing a coupling coordination model and a GTWR model, this study explores the coupling mechanism between China’s population structure and the digital economy,as well as the factors that affect the development level of the digital economy, from both spatial and temporal perspectives, and analyzes the reasons for the heterogeneity of coupling coordination degree. Finally,to explore the impact of economic development on the age structure of the population,a possible satisfaction model was constructed to calculate the carrying capacity of China’s elderly population and analyze its main constraints. The research results show that:(1)there is a significant imbalance in the population structure index and digital economy development level index among provinces and cities, with significant differences between advanced and backward regions.(2)The coupling between the population structure and the digital economy in most regions is in the high-quality coupling stage, but the unreasonable internal structure leads to low coordination.Among them, the coastal areas are in the intermediate coordination stage, the rest of the eastern regions are in the primary coordination stage, and the western regions are in the barely coordinated stage. With the increase of national attention and investment in the digital economy, the coordination degree gradually improves.(3)The coupling and coordination between population structure and the level of digital economy development have spatial agglomeration characteristics. The high values of coupling and coordination are mainly concentrated in the eastern region of China, while the low values are mainly concentrated in the western region of China.(4)The penetration rate of mobile internet and the proportion of software business income to GDP have the greatest impact on the development level of the digital economy, while the proportion of the female population and the proportion of the population aged 65 and above have no significant impact on the development level of the digital economy.(5)The impact of economic growth on the age structure of China’s population is not significant. In 2025,the carrying capacity of the elderly population in China ranges from 2.17 to 2.26,and the biggest constraint on carrying capacity is resource supply(water supply and energy production). |
