| Social capital of family is an important influential factor in the choice of private tutoring. In previous studies, quality and price of private tutoring are common explanatory variables, but social capital of family is not explored.Social capital of family is an important resource that families can grasp and utilize, especially in a society like China, which is known as a "differential pattern" where people are used to thinking and acting in social circles.Families are influenced by their peer groups and refer more to the choices of other families in their networks. The paper divides social capital of family into three dimensions: social network of family, social norms of family, and social trust of family, and analyzes the influence of social capital of family on students’ choice of private tutoringSocial networks of family influence the opportunities and quality of students’ private tutoring choices. On the one hand, the breadth of the social network has a significant impact on students’ opportunities for private tutoring choices. The breadth of the social network influences families’ access to guidance advice from professionals, educational advice from school teachers, and reference to other parents’ choices. On the other hand, the depth of the social network has a profound impact on the quality of students’ private tutoring choices. The depth of the social network affects the degree of orientation of families to information on educational policies, the accuracy of information on student development, and the richness of information on private tutoring.Social norms of family influence the expectations and needs of students’ private tutoring choices.Social norms typically determine the values and interactions that families follow, and social norms of interaction influence students’ expectations for private tutoring choices.Among them, human norms allow families to establish expectations of being in sync with the group, and face norms allow families to establish expectations of showing status.Sociocultural norms influence students’ needs for private tutoring choices, where consumer culture overturns traditional views of parenting and private tutoring becomes a way for families to build parent-child relationships.Symbolic order reshapes the symbolic value of private tutoring, and families choose private tutoring to gain access to peer resources.Family educational philosophies polarize the needs of students’ private tutoring choices, with instrumental-rational biased families seeking to improve students’ grades and valuerational biased families seeking to cultivate students’ interests.Social trust of family influences students’ motivation to choose private tutoring.Trust in school education is mainly expressed as trust in school quality and trust in teacher morality. The degree of family trust in school quality influences whether families will choose private tutoring to obtain compensation for education, and the degree of family trust in teacher morality influences whether families will choose private tutoring for targeted remediation.Trust in educational equity is mainly expressed as trust in opportunity equity and trust in resource equity. The degree of families’ trust in opportunity equity influences whether families will choose private tutoring to obtain a competitive advantage in education, and the degree of families’ trust in resource equity influences whether families will choose private tutoring to obtain quality educational resources. In order to better play the positive role of social capital of family and optimize students’ private tutoring choices,we need to start from three aspects: student growthoriented, participation of multiple subjects, and concern for disadvantaged groups.First,we should clarify parents’ responsibilities and choose private tutoring rationally;base on students’ needs and choose private tutoring carefully;promote home-school cooperation and arrange private tutoring reasonably.Second, strengthen the guidance of public opinion to objectively view private tutoring;optimize the quality of schools to curb the demand for private tutoring;eliminate regulatory blind spots to regulate the choice of private tutoring. Finally, release information accurately to reduce barriers to information access;strengthen information guidance to improve information access;and build a compensation mechanism to focus on the effectiveness of information release. |
