The problem of left-behind children is an important issue in the modernization of China’s rural areas.Although their intergenerational upbringing has the benefit of immersion in the fine traditions of their grandparents,it also generates some new problems, especially in the absence of parental roles, which can lead to various dysfunctions in the parent-child relationship, and these problems not only lead to the inability of family members to get along with each other, but also are detrimental to the healthy physical and mental development of left-behind children. The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of poor development of parent-child relationship caused by poor communication between service recipients and their parents,to eliminate the inferiority complex of service recipients,to build up their self-confidence,to enhance their interpersonal skills, and to promote their healthy physical and mental development. In this paper,we study the parent-child relationship of Xiao Yang,a left-behind child, using the family system theory and the dominant perspective theory as guidance, and attempt to solve the parent-child relationship dilemma faced by Xiao Yang,a left-behind child, through social work practice.I first measured the status of parent-child relationship in intergenerational parenting by using the parent-child relationship scale and interview method, and found that the manifestations of poor parent-child relationship include lack of communication between parents and children, hostility toward parents, low parent-child intimacy, and lack of trust in parents. There are many reasons for these problems, including parents’ lack of communication skills, low frequency of parent-child communication, failure of intergenerational caregivers to play the role of communication intermediaries, misunderstanding of parents by case owners, case owners’ busy work and neglect of their responsibilities to their children, lack of communication skills of case owners, lack of emotional communication between case owners and their parents, and lack of emotional communication between case owners in the parent-child relationship. The author assessed the client’s parent-child relationship needs, developed a corresponding intervention plan, and launched seven service sessions over a period of two months. In the course of the service, the author used a series of social work concepts and practical tools to achieve the goal of improving the parent-child relationship. The evaluation of the results showed that through the social work activities, the barrier between the client and her parents was initially eliminated, the client’s personality became more lively, her low self-esteem was improved, the communication between the client and her parents became more frequent, and the parent-child relationship developed in a harmonious direction. This study shows that social work has a professional improvement function for parent-child relationship problems of intergenerational children, and can promote the positive development of parent-child relationship, thus promoting the healthy physical and mental growth of the caseworker. The author has made maximum use of her personal resources and the resources of the social environment in the course of her practice, and she has gained personal experience of social work intervention methods and techniques, which is the value and significance of this study for her professional growth. This is the value and significance of this study for my professional growth. After reflecting on the intervention process and service effects,I believe that social work can find the commonalities of parent-child relationship problems in intergenerational parenting of left-behind children on the basis of observing the professional principles of social work individualization,so as to provide general practice reference and support for solving the parent-child relationship of left-behind children’s families.
