In the face of social transformation and the impact of multiculturalism, people’s concept of marriage has undergone significant changes. In recent years, the number of single-parent families is increasing, and the group of children from single-parent families has become a product of this phenomenon. The family is the initial place of socialization for children, and changes in family structure are closely related to children’s growth and development.Numerous studies have shown that children in single-parent families are severely deprived, both materially and emotionally, due to the absence of one parent’s role and the lack of family education.Compared to children in intact families, children in single-parent families tend to be more prone to low self-esteem and sensitivity, withdrawn and self-denial,and the incidence of depression is two to three times higher than that of children in intact families.Mental health problems in the group of children from single-parent families have attracted widespread attention from society and academia.Good self-perception is an important prerequisite for promoting children’s mental health and personality improvement. How to guide children from single-parent families to establish positive self-perception is of great significance to their healthy physical and mental development. In this study, the author used a child from a single-parent family, whom she met during her internship in a social work agency,as the client. After analyzing the client’s growth background and family situation systematically using the scale and interview method, she found that the client had negative self-perceptions and thus lacked in peer interaction,parent-child interaction and learning life. This paper combines the dominant perspective theory and cognitive-behavioral theory to develop targeted interventions for the clients, with the hope of exploring the professional perspective of social work to enhance the self-awareness of children in single-parent families. The first stage is to explore the client’s strengths and improve the client’s negative perceptions;the second stage is to help the client establish positive perceptions and help him/her build self-confidence;the third stage is to enhance the client’s interpersonal skills and strengthen the family support system;the fourth stage is to consolidate the client’s positive changes and establish growth goals. The conclusion of this case study found that the clients’ self-cognitive ability improved significantly, and there was a great improvement in interpersonal communication, family interaction, and learning, forming a virtuous cycle of mutual influence between cognition and behavior. The application of the strengths perspective theory in this case service implemented the social work concept of "helping people to help themselves" and was effective in improving the negative perceptions of the clients. Finally, the author reflects on the practice of casework service, and puts forward suggestions from the four levels of children, family, school and society from the perspective of social work.
