The aging population and the upgrading of industrial structure are the dual challenges facing China at present. As a country with a large population,China is currently very serious in terms of the speed of aging and the number of elderly people, which will inevitably have a strong inhibitory effect on economic vitality in the long run.At the same time,China’s economic growth rate is gradually slowing down, and it is in a critical period from high-speed development to high-quality development.Promoting the upgrading of industrial structure to build new economic growth points is the key point. Therefore,it is of great significance to study the impact of population aging on the upgrading of industrial structure. As an economic hotspot in recent years, the digital economy provides feasibility for alleviating the negative effects of population aging on the upgrading of industrial structure. Therefore, this paper combines the digital economy with the problem of population aging affecting industrial structure upgrading.Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2008 to 2020,this paper uses two-way fixed effect model, moderation effect model, instrumental variable method and threshold effect model to conduct empirical research on the relationship between population aging and industrial structure upgrading, and analyzes the impact of digital economy on the relationship between population aging and industrial structure upgrading. The results show that: First, the aging of the population has a positive impact on the advanced industrial structure, but it has a negative impact on the rationalization of the industrial structure.Second, there are regional differences in the relationship between population aging and industrial structure upgrading, which is affected by the level of economic development.Third, the digital economy can play a positive regulating role in the relationship between population aging and industrial structure upgrading, and this regulating effect is also affected by the level of regional economic development.Fourth, the threshold effect test shows that when the digital economy is used as the threshold variable, there is a nonlinear relationship between population aging and industrial structure upgrading. When the digital economy crosses the threshold, the positive impact of population aging on the upgrading of the industrial structure becomes more significant, and the negative impact on the rationalization of the industrial structure becomes less significant.Fifth, population aging will inhibit the optimization of labor structure and technological innovation. These two variables are one of the factors that promote the upgrading of industrial structure, and the digital economy can promote the optimization of labor structure and technological innovation,so that the negative impact of aging will be mitigation. Finally, based on the above conclusions, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions for China to deal with the problem of population aging, providing a reference for subsequent research. |
