With the rapid development of sexual physiology,sexual consciousness and sexual emotion,on the one hand,junior high school students’ desire to communicate with the opposite sex and understand sexual knowledge is enhanced,accompanied by a certain phenomenon of sexual desire and sexual impulse,and on the other hand,they lack the correct cognition and control of their physical and mental development,especially sexual physiology and psychological.Such contradictions and conflicts often cause many junior high school students to fall into a series of troubles and even pain,affecting their mental health,and even bringing serious psychological problems and deviant behavior,to the road of crime.It is of great significance to carry out sexual and mental health education for junior middle school students.In the Technical Guidelines for International Education(2018 Revision),UNESCO proposed that interactive and participatory methods are the most effective way to carry out sex education,and that participatory teaching methods should be used in sexual health education to promote the overall improvement of students’ learning process.However,in our country,participatory teaching has been introduced into sexual mental health education.It has not been widely popularized.In order to investigate the current situation and educational needs of sexual mental health in junior high schools,explore the appropriateness of applying participatory teaching to sexual mental health education in junior high schools under the background of Chinese culture,and explore sexual mental health education programs suitable for junior high school students,this study conducted research from the following two aspects: Study 1 selected 600 junior high school students in grades1,2 and 3 of a middle school in Kunming to investigate the current situation of sexual mental health in junior high schools,and the influence of gender and other factors on sexual psychology in junior high school.On this basis,30 junior high school students were selected for further in-depth interviews to understand the needs of sexual mental health education in junior high school.Study 2 is an intervention study.According to the results of study 1,combined with the participatory teaching theory,the intervention program of sexual mental health education in junior high school was designed.Using the design of the experimental group and the control group,the students in the experimental group were given a participatory mental health education intervention once a week,a total of 7 times.During the intervention study,two groups of subjects were tested before and after.Based on the results of the two parts of the study,the main conclusions are as follows:(1)The sexual mental health of junior middle school students in Kunming City is in the middle level.Junior high school students in this group can better identify their gender roles,have a positive attitude towards sexual issues,and have a low grasp of sexual knowledge.(2)The overall status of sexual mental health of junior middle school students is as follows: the overall status of female sexual mental health is better than that of boys;The lower the grade of junior middle school students,the worse the overall state of sexual mental health;The mental health status of middle school students in urban environment is better than that of middle school students in rural environment.The mental health status of junior high school students whose mothers’ education level is high school and college is better than that of junior high school students whose mothers’ education level is primary school and below.(3)Further interviews show that the needs of sexual mental health education in junior middle school mainly focus on sexual cognition and sexual adaptation.(4)This study shows that the application of participatory teaching in the sexual mental health education of junior middle schools under the background of Chinese culture has a good suitability.(5)Participatory sexual mental health education can improve the sexual awareness level of junior high school students,help them adapt to the changes of adolescent sexual characteristics and develop good heterosexual relationships,and thus improve the sexual mental health status of junior high school students.
