With the reform of junior high school physics curriculum standards, the cultivation of scientific inquiry ability in the core literacy of physics has become one of the important tasks of physics teaching. At the same time, the application of project-based learning model is conducive to the improvement of students’ literacy in physical science inquiry. This paper attempts to apply the project-based learning model to junior high school physics teaching, and test the effect of this model on students’ active scientific inquiry in practice. The main contents are summarized as follows:1.By reading and consulting relevant domestic and foreign literature on project-based learning model, student initiative and junior high school physics science inquiry, the background of this topic research is determined. At the same time,it is proposed that the project-based learning model can promote students initiated physical science inquiry, and the research significance and research methods of this topic are discussed, and the related concepts are defined to guide the follow-up practice of the project.2.In order to understand the initiative of junior high school students in conducting physical science inquiry, questionnaires were prepared, distributed, recovered and sorted. Then, interviews were conducted with front-line teachers. The results of investigation and interview show that students’ initiative in physical science inquiry is not optimistic. The root cause is mainly due to the weak awareness of students’ initiative in scientific inquiry, the lack of attention paid by teachers to the cultivation of students’ initiative in scientific inquiry, and the single teaching method. Therefore, the author believes that it is imperative to develop junior high school students’ initiative in conducting physical scientific inquiry.Secondly, the project-based learning model encourages students to construct knowledge through independent practice and active inquiry, which satisfies the basic requirement of scientific inquiry in the core literacy of physics. Therefore, the project-based learning model can effectively drive junior high school students to initiate scientific inquiry in physics.3.Based on the project-based learning model and the characteristics of physical science inquiry, the five principles of teaching and the teaching process are proposed, and the teaching design is carried out according to the constructed teaching process. Two insignificantly different classes were also selected to demonstrate the usefulness of the project-based learning model for students’ active engagement in physical science inquiry.4.After the teaching practice, the post-test questionnaire scales are analyzed and collated. The results show that there are significant differences in the results of the questionnaire survey between the experimental class and the control class. It shows that the use of project-based learning model can promote students’ initiative in physical science inquiry. In conclusion, through theoretical research and in-depth practice, the results show that the use of project-based learning model has shown varying degrees of improvement in the six dimensions for junior high school students’ initiative in scientific inquiry. The author hopes that the research of this paper can provide some teaching theoretical references for junior high school physics teachers.
