The implementation of the policy of withdrawing and merging schools has led to a significant reduction in the number of rural schools.In order to provide children with better educational resources,it has become common for rural families to go to cities to accompany them in school.Wuqi,Inner Mongolia,is no exception.Schools in the compulsory education stage within the banner have adjusted enrollment rules with policies,and no longer provide student accommodation.The number of accompanying families in Wuqi has significantly increased.In rural families,there is a significant gender division,with most of the accompanying reading tasks being undertaken by the child’s mother.After rural mothers enter urban accompanying education,their identity changes from“traditional rural family mothers”to“accompanying reading mothers in cities and towns”.When accompanying reading mothers adapt to the new environment,they experience greater pressure due to their insufficient family educational ability,employment ability,and interpersonal skills,which further affects their sense of self-identity and self-worth.The theory of empowerment emphasizes the exploration of the personal potential of service objects and the promotion of good interaction between people and the environment.Under the framework of empowerment theory,this study aims to help Wu Qi’s accompanying mothers establish a sense of self-development,establish a social support system,and enhance their self-development ability by transmitting new knowledge and skills about urban life to them.Through a questionnaire survey,the author found that accompanying mothers in Dexin community,where there are relatively concentrated accompanying mothers in Wuqi,generally have problems of neglecting self-development,limited family education ability,weak social support networks,and high economic pressure.Dexin Community has many accompanying mothers and few contacts with each other.Integrating them can form group strength and promote group development.The high homogeneity among research subjects is an important factor in their formation of mutual support,understanding,and assistance.Through recruitment,the author has established an empowerment group for accompanying mothers,established a communication platform that allows them to speak freely and enhancetheir warm classroom,striving to empower them from the personal level,the support network level,and the social environment level.In terms of content,including knowledge popularization,psychological counseling,skill training,and communication,etc.During the research process,the author found that the improvement of self-development ability of accompanying mothers in cities is influenced and limited by the environment.Only by helping the research subjects improve their living environment can they achieve self-development.Mothers studying in cities are deeply limited in their work and life due to environmental changes,and should receive attention from the community and women’s social work.Their self-development ability needs multi-channel support.The study found that comprehensively improving the self-development ability of accompanying mothers in cities requires not only empowering individuals and strengthening support for service objects from the family level,but also increasing support for accompanying mothers in cities in terms of social environment and social policies.The high-quality and balanced development of compulsory education,the acceptance of urban communities,the development of specific employment positions,and vocational skills training are all necessary ways to help accompanying mothers escape from marginalized social situations.This article belongs to the cross study of urban community social work and women’s social work.Mothers studying in cities are a part of the diversity of urban population.Proper cultivation of their self-development ability can promote the development of urban communities.The author’s focus is on integrating diverse forces,tapping the potential of mothers studying in cities,and promoting the dual development of urban communities and women.
