| Institutional elderly care is a meaningful way to solve the elderly care problems of some elderly groups from social groups. However, due to the lack of awareness of institutional managers about senior care services and the lagging participation of social work at this stage, most of the institutional services are still limited to the material level of food, clothing, housing, and transportation, but lack spiritual comfort and humanistic care, which leads to a low sense of well-being of the elderly in their old age.Social work intervenes in the peer groups of the elderly in the bead house. It brings into play their social functions in terms of individual socialization and mutual help, which is a critical way to improve the service quality of the bead house. Therefore,it is necessary and significant to use group work in the bead house to build a platform for mutual help and enhance peer support for the elderly. In this study,a questionnaire survey was conducted using the questionnaire method with the elderly in Bead House A.The results revealed that the elderly in the bead house have problems such as social isolation,an unsatisfied sense of being supported and respected, and difficulty actively seeking peer help. The analysis revealed that the three main dimensions of peer support, objective support, emotional support, and individual use of support, were all at low levels. The needs for peer support of the elderly were analyzed and assessed to conclude that the elderly in the bead house need health, being respected and trusted, and the need for subjective utilization. And under the guidance of social support theory and the group dynamics approach, six practical activities of peer support groups were carried out, taking into account the social characteristics and psychological features of the elderly group. In the early stage of the group activities,we built a platform for group members to interact with each other and cultivate a sense of mutual support;in the middle set of the group activities,we strengthened emotional communication to enhance the group members’ self-confidence;in the later stage of the group activities,we reinforced peer support to consolidate the existing achievements. At the end of the group activities, the social support scores of the institutionalized elderly before and after the actions were compared using the Social Support Rating Scale to evaluate the effectiveness of the peer support group practice intervention. Finally,it was concluded that the group intervention helped to enhance the peer support of the institutionalized elderly, improve their social skills and damaging emotion management ability, and achieve the purpose of indirectly enhancing the well-being of the institutionalized elderly in their old age through social work.In addition, reflections on the practical process of the group activities were conducted to provide valuable references for future research on social work interventions with older adults in bead house. |
