New media technologies are gradually being integrated into classroom teaching and learning as an emerging educational resource that drives a shift in the way students learn.Elementary school is a period of rapid development of children’s autonomy and a critical stage for developing children’s independent learning ability.Under the new media environment, elementary school students’ independent language learning is affected by various factors, ushering in unprecedented opportunities and challenges. Therefore,it is very important to study the current situation of elementary school students’ independent language learning in the new media environment for language teaching as well as students’ development. In this study, the third grade students of Y elementary school in Shijiazhuang City,Hebei Province, were selected as the research subjects.First,a questionnaire survey was conducted to gain a preliminary understanding of the current situation of primary school students’ independent language learning in the new media environment through four survey dimensions: intrinsic motivation, independent regulation, independent reflection, and adaptability to carry out independent language learning in the new media environment.Second,we interviewed some teachers and students to gain a deeper understanding of the current situation of primary school students’ independent language learning in the new media environment, and corroborated the data obtained from the questionnaire. Finally, the new media language classrooms in the third grade of elementary school were observed to further understand the current situation of primary school students’ independent language learning and to provide case evidence for the research discourse. The survey found that students’ independent language learning in the third year of elementary school in the new media environment is at a low level, and the development of each dimension is uneven.Four problems exist: the lack of students’ independent control ability, the low level of independent reflection, the lack of quality resources for independent learning, and the lack of independent learning strategies. The factors influencing these problems include two aspects: first, the internal factors of students. They have immature attention mechanisms and low levels of self-regulation;low levels of metacognitive development and poor independent reflection ability;insufficient resource acquisition and analysis ability and inability to identify quality resources;and dependency mentality and low levels of independent learning strategies.Second, external factors. The complexity of the new media environment interferes with elementary students’ independent language learning;influenced by the traditional teaching evaluation model, elementary students lack the awareness of independent reflection;the school resource construction mechanism is imperfect and lacks support for elementary students’ independent language learning;teachers’ professional competence and quality are insufficient and lack guidance on using elementary students’ independent learning strategies. In view of the identified problems and the logical relationships between their influencing factors, strategies to improve the current situation of primary school students’ independent language learning in the new media environment are proposed:first, organizing language courses using elementary school students’ attention patterns to improve students’ ability to regulate their independent language learning;second, constructing an independent evaluation system from a metacognitive perspective to promote students’ independent reflection;third, strengthening the construction of digital language learning resources to support students Third, strengthen the construction of digital language learning resources to support students’ independent learning;fourth, strengthen language independent learning guidance to help students master independent learning strategies.
