With the diversion of general vocational education and the expansion of secondary vocational students in recent years, secondary vocational education is facing great opportunities and challenges. To promote the development of secondary education, enhance the competitiveness of education and school vitality, achieve sustainable development of secondary vocational education, improve the quality of talent is particularly important. The quality of education is the lifeline of education. The quality of talents embodies the quality of education. How to improve the quality of education has to do with the shift from the perspective of input quality to output quality. Therefore, the study on student engagement of secondary vocational students has gradually attracted attention.Student engagement refers to student-led individual input and efforts,teacher-based guidance, communication and interaction, and school-based environmental and institutional support. It includes five dimensions: Level of Academic Challenge,Active and Collaborative Learning,Student Faculty Interaction,Enriching Educational Experiences,Supportive Campus Environment. This study conducted an empirical investigation from the overall situation and five dimensions of learning engagement, and used SPSS 21.0 for data analysis and processing.Based on the interviews with teachers and students and the observation results of 15 years of student work, teaching work and administrative work,we cautiously learned that: The overall situation of student engagement is at the medium level, which is manifested in the low level of learning challenge, active cooperative learning,student-teacher interaction, educational experience richness, and the school environment support is at a good level. At the same time, there are differences in gender, subject and family residence.Through the analysis of the results of the questionnaire and interview conclusions, this study mainly analyzes its own factors such as learning interest and interpersonal skills, and external factors such as teacher burnout.First, students’ interest in learning.Learning interest can increase the investment effect of learning, and consciously put time and energy into learning. However, secondary vocational students are not very interested in their major,so they will reduce the time and energy to seriously invest in their study.Second, students’ interpersonal skills.Good interpersonal communication skills can enhance the investment effect of learning, and make themselves find a sense of existence and belonging in the collective, get a sense of achievement. In reality,it is found that the interpersonal communication ability of secondary vocational students is not strong, especially the communication with teachers is inadequate, which will lead to the lack of interpersonal skills in cooperative learning between teachers and students. The third is job burnout.According to the existing studies, secondary vocational teachers have a certain degree of job burnout.Practical research found that secondary vocational teachers have job burnout, which makes teachers’ external motivation factors do not play their due role and affect student engagement. This study puts forward some countermeasures to improve student engagement from three aspects: learning interest, interpersonal skills and teachers’ job burnout.First,in terms of improving students’ interest in learning,we should build a major selection platform oriented by students’ interest, increase investment and improve the campus training base, encourage and care for students, improve their confidence in learning, and change the teaching mode and method to enhance students’ interest in learning.Secondly,we should carry out abundant activities to improve students’ interpersonal skills. For instance, open courses to improve interpersonal skills, carry out psychological guidance and help;adhere to the "student-centered" education model, build a harmonious teacher-student relationship.Thirdly,in the aspect of reducing teachers’ job burnout, measures should be taken to reduce teachers’ working pressure and simplify the working process, create a teacher-student interaction platform to enhance the teacher-student relationship;improve teachers’ sense of self-efficacy and make teachers have a sense of gain.
